The School of Dance at Mason is increasingly acknowledged as one of the premier institutions offering professional preparation for a career in dance as a performer, teacher, creative artist or administrator. Rigorous conservatory training combined with a liberal arts education also provides the foundation for continuing education in law, business, education or medical field.

Mission: The School of Dance is committed to providing its majors the best environment for artistic, intellectual and educational growth. Our standard of excellence, beginning with the highly selective audition process, encourages our majors to fulfill their professional potential. We teach a comprehensive dance curriculum with an emphasis on rigorous modern dance and ballet technical preparation which serves as the foundation for our students' participation as active members of the dance community. As emerging artists, our majors contribute to the cultural vitality of the university and the region by performing their own original choreography and that of master choreographers. The school is also committed to providing all university undergraduates with a wide range of classes in concert and world dance forms. Central to this mission is the desire to foster a deeper understanding of dance as a global medium of artistic expression.

"The recent deaths of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Breonna Taylor in Louisville, and Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia have put Americans sharply on notice that the work of equality, the work of justice, the work of freedom for all is still a work in progress – and that progress is not always forward. Racial prejudice and injustice and violence still survive in our society despite laws, despite education, despite art, despite science, despite goodwill in the hearts of many. " An excerpt from an open letter from CVPA Dean, Rick Davis

From the School of Dance:
The School of Dance (faculty, staff, administrators) must do better. During this painful time, we continue to reflect on the insidiousness and damage of racism. We have had an opportunity to re-envision our perspectives and recommit to our advocacy for meaningful and necessary change. The School of Dance is committed to our Black and Brown community members, who we love and fully support.
We are committed allies in the fight for an anti-racist community. We are here, we are listening, we are heartbroken and we stand with you in solidarity.

Now is the time that progress must move forward.

Recognizing that communities nationwide have suffered severe implications from COVID-19, besides those only relating to the arts, the entire Class of 2019 pooled a minimum of $5 each to take Mason Dance Professor Roger Jeffrey’s ballet class for their 1 Year Anniversary of graduating from the university. All proceeds were donated to Represent Justice, an organization dedicated to support those incarcerated and vulnerable to COVID-19. Together, the Class of 2019 with Professor Jeffrey raised $250!

Taking this time to reflect on some of our favorite #tbmasondance memories! This memory is of two of our newly graduated seniors, Jonathan Harrison and Mia Brice who had the opportunity to showcase their pieces at ACDA in March. Mia Brice’s piece, entitled “Pieces”, was selected to go to California this summer. Although that has since been cancelled, we still acknowledge that huge honor and are proud of them both!

Today is the day our Seniors become graduates of George Mason School of Dance! Although we couldn’t celebrate all of their achievements and contributions in person, we’ve made the best of the situation by holding a virtual celebration with the entire company! We are so proud of them, to say the least, and know that they have bright futures ahead of them! Congratulations class of 2020! 🥳
