https://film.gmu.edu/student-resources/editing-labs

The Film and Video Studies Program offers a 120-credit multidisciplinary BA degree with concentrations in Directing/Producing, Screenwriting, and Production/PostProduction. Students study film and video production, theory, criticism, ethics, screenwriting, and business. As soon as students arrive to the program, they will take production courses, have access to equipment in the FAVS Equipment Cage and computing resources in our Sage Room and Mason STAR Lab. Our program is multidisciplinary which means that classes are in Film and Video, but also Art and Visual Technology, Communication, English, Game Design, Theater, History and Art History, Modern and Classical Languages, Women and Gender Studies, African and African American Studies, and Global Studies departments. Film and Video Studies is driven by an independent film spirit. We work with students who use visual storytelling to increase self-reflexivity and cross-cultural understanding, who are interested in working collaboratively, and who are open to exploring a variety of filmmaking styles and practices historically and internationally. Creative solutions and original thinking are paramount as students practice the craft of film and its related forms (serialized fiction on television and the web, nonfiction / documentary, fiction and experimental cinema). Professionalism and entrepreneurship are core components of the program. FAVS filmmakers are screening work at regional and international film festivals, winning awards, landing jobs in all areas of media production and post, and starting their own companies.

GENTRIFICATION ALONG THE EAST COAST

This semester, artists studying with Professor G Chesler in FAVS 377: Interactive Storytelling for Social Change produced media across platforms designed to engage audiences in critical social issues of our time. This week, in conjunction with the Film at Mason Festival, we highlight some of the makers:

Hello! My name is Jordan Lewis, and I am a Junior majoring in Film and Video Studies with a minor in Marketing. A social change that I care about and the subject of this Story Map is gentrification. I feel gentrification isn’t talked about enough and by creating a story map, I hope to help viewers understand and participate in making a change.

Texas Blackout 2021

This semester, artists studying with Professor G Chesler in FAVS 377: Interactive Storytelling for Social Change produced media across platforms designed to engage audiences in critical social issues of our time. This week, in conjunction with the Film at Mason Festival, we highlight some of the makers:

Hello, my name is Alex Purdy. I am a junior in FAVS, focusing on Production and minoring in Photography. At the moment, a social change issue that has my attention are the rising hate crime rates against the AAPI community.

A project I wish to share from FAVS 377 is my Story Map covering the February 2021 Texas power outage. In this Story Map, I show a narrative of what happened during that week, and how it was no act of nature that took down the grid. Through a combination of text explanations and maps, I take you through the (brief) series of events that preceded and the tragic fallout and loss of individual lives during the power outage. My intention with this project was to visualize and localize what happened that day and clear up some of the misinformation surrounding the power outage.

Why Film at Mason?

George Mason University’s Film and Video Studies program is the first multidisciplinary undergraduate degree in filmmaking in Virginia. With 200 students, we offer a B.A.in Film and Video Studies with concentrations in Directing, Producing, Production (Cinematography), Post-Production (Editing and Sound), and Screenwriting. Each concentration includes a business course, ethics course and capstone experience where students are mentored by faculty on original projects in their senior year that prepare them for work as professional media makers. Film at Mason is driven by an independent film spirit. Faculty are keen to increase self-reflexivity and cross-cultural understanding in our students. We inspire students to work collaboratively and explore a variety of filmmaking styles and techniques. Creative solutions and original thinking are paramount.

Film at Mason faculty are working professionals, award-winning independent filmmakers, award-winning educators, and published scholars. Their films have been exhibited worldwide at juried festivals, on public television and cable networks. As cinematographers, editors, and producers-for-hire, our faculty and adjuncts faculty work with the best in the industry on theatrical films, documentaries for broadcast, commercials, music videos and scripted television. Housed in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Film and Video Studies is a collaborative program which also includes courses taught by professionals in Theater, Visual Arts, Communication, English, Film and Media Studies, among others. Film students learn from professionals making work now, which informs their own development as visual storytellers. By studying film history, theory and ethics from nationally recognized film critics and scholars, students learn to see moving images in new ways while honing their skills in written expression and criticism of film form. Production and editing facilities include a Black Box theater space where students can build a film set for a junior or senior level production, a post-production work space with stations that include Final Cut Pro and the Adobe Creative Suite, and a range of cameras, sound and lighting equipment for location and studio-based productions. George Mason University STAR Lab in the Johnson Center includes a three-camera studio with lighting grid, green screen, and digital switching system solely for student use. The STAR Lab also has equipment checkout, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Creative Suite and Avid editing stations for students.

The Film at Mason program has relationships with regional production and post-production houses, equipment rental facilities, film festivals, cable networks, casting agencies, television studios, professional media production organizations, professional sports teams, and companies large and small that we partner with in various capacities. We facilitate student exhibitions at regional film festivals. Our students have completed professionalizing internships at over 200 sites in the DC/ Virginia/ Maryland area. Film at Mason graduates find employment after graduation - doing work in media production or starting their own film companies using business skills learned in the program.

Film students participate in a wide-variety of professionalizing experiences including the Mason Film Lab, where each semester Film students collaborate with an experienced director to produce a short film on location. Student organizations enrich the Film at Mason experience and include Delta Kappa Alpha Iota Chapter – the Professional Cinematic Arts Fraternity, Mason Cable Network - a student-operated run television network, Fourth Estate – the student run newspaper that includes a video channel with student-produced content, among many other organizations. Film at Mason staff support students through personalized academic advising, program communication, production of our three annual student film events: the three day Mason Film Festival, Film at Mason Fall Showcase, and the annual Best of Film at Mason. Our Film Advisory Board of film supporters and professionals advise students on their senior projects, mentor graduates on career development, and support the Film Scholarship and Pitch Awards – monetary awards recognizing Film at Mason student achievement.

This film program looks amazing! I am actually studying film and intend on pursuing a career in it as well, so it’s nice to have a place where I can get inspired by others with my same passion. These past few weeks of quarantine have been rough for my creativity but I thought watching some new films would help spark it back up. I found a new streaming site called Film Festival Flix and it has really aided me and shown me some new creative stories and approaches to filmmaking. This streaming platform soley houses films from film festivals so the content is fresh, and I love supporting my fellow filmmakers. There are film festival channels on here of all sorts from Halloween Horror Fest to Kino Lorber Film Collection. The options are endless and unique. This is definitely an awesome platform and hub for filmmakers and aficionados alike. I hope you get the chance to check it out! Stay safe!
