What a joyous occasion celebrating the dedication of the Katherine G. Johnson Hall at the @georgemasonu SciTech Campus today. Ms. Johnson was the NASA mathematician who ushered the United States into a new era of space exploration and, in doing so, inspired generations of female scientists and mathematicians, including women of color.

Today is Giving Day! For 24 hours, we invite all Mason Patriots to help us reach our goal of $3,500 by donating to the Black Alumni Chapter.

These funds will help the BAC support programming efforts of the different Black/African Heritage student organizations at Mason.

Many students benefit from these organizations creating programs that are welcoming, inclusive, and supportive to students of color on a predominantly white campus.

#BlackHistoryFacts .....

NASA on Friday officially renamed a West Virginia facility in honor of Katherine Johnson, an African-American mathematician whose work for NASA in the 1960s inspired the movie “Hidden Figures.”

The center is now known as the Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation Facility.

Staff at the Fairmont facility are responsible for making sure the software on NASA’s high-profile missions runs safely and successfully, the center’s website states.

Jim Bridenstine, NASA’s administrator, said the facility carries on Johnson’s legacy of “mission-critical computations.”

“I am thrilled we are honoring Katherine Johnson in this way as she is a true American icon who overcame incredible obstacles and inspired so many,” Bridenstine said in a statement on Friday.

#BlackHistoryFacts.... Shirley Chisholm’s story is the embodiment of the American Dream, and her trailblazing nature is quintessentially New York. A Brooklyn-born daughter of working-class immigrants, she was unapologetically ambitious; to this day, our society is still uncomfortable with ambitious women, particularly women of color. She was so many firsts: first black woman elected to Congress, first black candidate for a major party nomination, and the first woman and African American to run for President of the U.S.A.

#BlackHistoryFacts.....Colin Rand Kaepernick is an American activist and former American football quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). He last played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. He silently protested by kneeling during the National Anthem at NFL games to bring awareness to wrongful police brutality on Black and Brown people. Today, we honor Kaepernick as a hero! #imwithkap #blacklivesmatter #kaepernick

#BlackHistoryFacts ... Although Thurgood Marshall is best known for being the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court, he established his legacy long before his appointment to the Court in 1967. Due to segregation, Thurgood Marshall was unable to attend his hometown law school, the University of Maryland. Not deterred from becoming an attorney, he graduated at the top of his class from Howard University School of Law and later sued the University of Maryland in Pearson v. Murray, which challenged segregation and discrimination. After winning the case, Marshall would go on to establish the NAACP Legal Defense Fund as a separate entity and challenge discrimination laws across the country.

Today, we celebrate the contributions of Thurgood Marshall who ensured that a generation of African Americans had the opportunity to attend any school they so chose.

#BlackHistoryFacts - Ruby Bridges

At the tender age of six, Ruby Bridges advanced the cause of civil rights in November 1960 when she became the first African American student to integrate an elementary school in the South.

Born on September 8, 1954, Bridges was the oldest of five children for Lucille and Abon Bridges, farmers in Tylertown, Mississippi. When Ruby was two years old, her parents moved their family to New Orleans, Louisiana in search of better work opportunities.

Ruby and her mother were escorted by four federal marshals to the school every day that year. She walked past crowds screaming vicious slurs at her. Undeterred, she later said she only became frightened when she saw a woman holding a black baby doll in a coffin. She spent her first day in the principal’s office due to the chaos created as angry white parents pulled their children from school. Many parents withdrew their children permanently. Ruby ate lunch alone and sometimes played with her teacher at recess, but she never missed a day of school that year.

Happy Birthday #TrayvonMartin! We will never forget. #BlackLivesMatter #RIP

In Remembrance: We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
