Mindful Monday:

It’s hard to help others when you aren’t taking care of yourself. Give yourself the gift of time this summer and develop some practices that will contribute to your well-being.

On a rotating basis, facilitators from different areas of the university will share mindfulness practices each Tuesday from noon to 12:45 p.m. in the Johnson Center, Room 244.

These are drop-in sessions, so you don’t need to commit to every week, but please arrive on time.

Sessions begin May 7 and conclude August 20. Contact Katie Clare at [email protected] with any questions.

College Students (And Their Parents) Face A Campus Mental Health 'Epidemic'

Wellness Wednesday:

"As colleges and universities across the country report an explosion of mental health problems, a new book argues that college life may be more stressful than ever. Dr. Anthony Rostain, co-author of The Stressed Years of Their Lives, notes that today's college students are experiencing an "inordinate amount of anxiety" — much of it centered on 'surviving college and doing well.'"

Anthony Rostain and B. Janet Hibbs say college students today face an "inordinate amount of anxiety" — but parents can help their kids cope. Their book is The Stressed Years of Their Lives.

Wellness Wednesday:

"How would you rate your day today so far? When asked that question as part of the 2017 Pew Research Center Global Attitudes Survey, 73 percent of Nigerians said that they were having a particularly good day, while only 7 percent of Japanese respondents described their day as “particularly good,” with Latin Americans (48 percent), Americans (44 percent), Middle Easterners (25 percent) and Europeans (22 percent) falling in between the joyful Nigerians and the dour Japanese."

#TeamPositivity at University Career Services Spreads Well-Being at Mason

Mindful Monday:

“Positivity gives you a well-being toolkit for problem solving, for hope, for purpose, and to look for opportunities," Wilkerson said. "It rewires your brain to see possibilities in any situation. Positivity also gives you a shield against negative circumstances bringing you down. If you could train yourself to have a positive attitude, you can respond to negative situations with strength and learn from them.”

University Career Services employees are spreading well-being at Mason through their #TeamPositivity movement:

"At a time when Braille literacy is declining among Americans, advocates for the visually impaired say the new product introduces a fun, interactive way to engage with the tactile system."

From Gloom To Gratitude: 8 Skills To Cultivate Joy

Mindful Monday:

"The latest evidence comes from a new study of caregivers — all of whom had the stressful job of taking care of a loved one with dementia. The study found that following a five-week course, participants' depression scores decreased by 16 percent and their anxiety scores decreased by 14 percent. The findings were published in the current issue of Health Psychology."

Reaching out in kindness, mindful breathing and taking time daily to note positive moments and personal strengths are all part of a program that reduces anxiety and depression. But it takes practice.

Pay Tuition or Eat Dinner? Nearly Half of All State College Students Go Hungry

GMU has a food pantry called "Patriot Pantry". The Patriot Pantry provides access to non-perishable food items, toiletries, and basic school supplies to George Mason University students who are unable to afford them. They raise awareness about food insecurity and homelessness within the Mason student population. They strive to educate and unite our community.

The Pantry is housed under the Student Support and Advocacy Center (SSAC) in the Division of University Life. In addition to providing non-perishable food and personal items, we also strive to educate student users about the resources available on campus and in the surrounding community.

Many routinely skip meals and take ‘poverty naps’ because they cannot afford groceries. Campus food pantries are helping, but are they enough?

Secondary Traumatic Stress for Educators: Understanding and Mitigating the Effects

Wellness Wednesday:

"Roughly half of American school children have experienced at least some form of trauma — from neglect, to abuse, to violence. In response, educators often find themselves having to take on the role of counselors, supporting the emotional healing of their students, not just their academic growth.

With this evolving role comes an increasing need to understand and address the ways in which student trauma affects our education professionals."

Teaching kids who have experienced trauma can be stressful to educators. Acknowledging that teachers might be experiencing secondary traumatic stress is a step in the right direction to help teachers feel that they are not working alone.

Gen Z Takeover: As demand for mental health services grows, colleges give students new tools

Mindful Monday:

"In 2013, George Mason University set its sights on a novel goal in higher education: becoming a model for how colleges can support well-being on campus.

The concept was simple. Rather than just provide students with an education, the public university in Virginia would bake well-being into every aspect of college life to help all members of its community thrive and find personal fulfillment."

By streamlining counseling centers, adding de-stress stations and rolling out well-being initiatives, institutions are helping students thrive on campus.
