Q&A: Why a Rested Brain Is More Creative

Wellness Wednesday:

The Art of Resting

By Milagros (Millie) Rivera, Director of Faculty Diversity, Inclusion and Well-being, Office of Faculty Affairs

An intentional restorative rest practice can help us become healthier, stronger as well as more creative and productive. When we think of rest, many of us think of a passive activity, but those studying rest say people who are productive engage in restorative rest activities that are vigorous and mentally engaging. How can rest be vigorous and engaging? Because it offers a break from the way we normally work. While we take a long walk in nature, run or do a yoga routine, for instance, our unconscious mind continues to work. As we relax, our mind can find creative ways to address problems we were tackling during active working time. Think of those aha moments that pop up when you have taken a break after struggling with a problem; that is the power of restorative rest. It is important that we view rest as an important part of work. The better we are at resting, the more creative and productive we will be at our work.

Jabr, F. (2016 September 1). Q&A: Why a Rested Brain is More Creative. Scientific American. Neurological Health. (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/q-a-why-a-rested-brain-is-more-creative/)
Soojung-Kim, A. (2016). Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less. New York: Basic Books.

Taking breaks—from naps to sabbaticals—can help us to refocus and recharge
