We are committed to training students at all levels, from high school students who intern with us through post-doctoral students seeking to gain additional skills after receiving their doctoral degree. The department serves more undergraduate majors (roughly 1,300) than any other department in the university, as well as a strong cadre of graduate students (roughly 250) who participate in one of our five specialty areas of study: applied developmental psychology, biological psychology, clinical psychology, human factors and applied cognition, industrial-organizational psychology, and school psychology. Students at all levels have the opportunity to work side by side with our faculty in their labs; some of these students go on to do their own independent research through our undergraduate honors program. https://www.facebook.com/groups/201847389884497/

The George Mason University Office of Community Egagament and Civc Learning is excited to highlight one of our own, Dr. Amanda Sanchez, Assistant Professor of Psychology, who will join an interdisciplinary panel exploring barriers to healthcare access and opportunities for collaboration, research, and community-driven solutions.

Dr. Sanchez will be joined by Mai Pham, MD, MPH, internist and health policy leader focused on autism; Lacretia Smith, RN, BSN, Clinical Nurse Leader focused on aging adults; and Hadeel Elyazori, GMU PhD candidate focused on information technology. The discussion will be moderated by Gilbert Gimm, PhD, Professor of Health Administration, Policy, and Informatics in the College of Public Health.

📈 Mason Psychology continues to rise!

The George Mason University Department of Psychology is celebrating continued recognition for the strength and growth of its academic program. In the 2027 Best Colleges rankings, U.S. News & World Report recognized Psychology among George Mason University’s eight undergraduate programs ranked nationally. All eight programs earned rankings among the top four in Virginia, highlighting the strength of academic programs across the university.

For Psychology, that recognition includes a jump to #83 nationally (tied) and #44 among public universities — up from #113 nationally and #59 among public universities in the previous rankings. 🎉

This recognition reflects the continued dedication and work of our faculty, students, staff, alumni, and supporters who help make Mason Psychology what it is. 💚💛

🎉 Celebrating our Psychology alumni!

We’re proud to congratulate Steven Zhou, PhD Psychology ’24 and CERG Computational Social Science ’24, and Rebecca Ullrich, MA Psychology ’15, on being recognized with the 2026 CHSS G.O.L.D. Award and 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award in Psychology, respectively!

Zhou is an assistant professor of psychological science at Claremont McKenna College, where he researches leadership, personality, and vocational psychology. Ullrich serves as assistant superintendent of early childhood access, enrollment, and policy at the Virginia Department of Education, where she works to expand access to early childhood programs across Virginia.

Their work reflects the many ways Psychology alumni are applying their expertise to make an impact in academia, public policy, and beyond. Congratulations, Steven and Rebecca! 🎓👏

Hosted by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the one-day immersive event showcased next-generation transportation technologies and innovations supporting the National Roadway Safety Strategy.

🧠 New Psychology Concentration: Behavioral and Mental Health! 💙

We’re excited to announce a new concentration in Behavioral and Mental Health (BMH) within the Psychology major! This concentration focuses on building the interpersonal knowledge and practical skills needed to work with community members who need health services.

Students in the BMH concentration will have opportunities to explore:
✨ Interpersonal knowledge and skill development
🤝 Practicum courses and hands-on learning
💼 Volunteer and work experiences serving community members who need health services

📚 Important for current students: Fall 2026 is the first catalog year in which students can declare the BMH concentration. If you entered Mason under an earlier catalog year and would like to declare this concentration, you will need to update your catalog year to the current 2026–2027 catalog year before declaring it.
