For the past seven weeks, second year Doctor of Physical Therapy students at Sacred Heart University enrolled in the Geriatric Elective have been working one-on-one with older adult clients to promote experiential learning in implementation of high intensity function-based training.
Using individualized, evidence-based exercise interventions, students have been helping participants safely challenge their strength, balance, mobility, and endurance while building confidence and independence. Throughout the program, students have progressed each client’s exercises based on their abilities and goals, demonstrating the power of appropriately dosed, high-intensity training for older adults.
Beyond the physical gains, this program has fostered meaningful connections between students and clients. Together, they have celebrated milestones, overcome challenges, and reinforced that age is never a barrier to improving function and quality of life.
We’re proud of our students for their dedication and grateful to our wonderful clients for their hard work, enthusiasm, and trust. We look forward to sharing the outcomes of the program as we wrap up the final weeks!
