Solano Community College won the Shirley Baskin Commissioner’s Cup from the Bay Valley Conference for the second consecutive year! 💙 🎉

This honor recognizes our athletes' hard work and dedication both on the team and in the classroom. Our Falcons have been bringing their A-game to class with a department-wide 3.30 GPA!

Join us this September as we celebrate Latinx Heritage Month and honor the rich and diverse cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions of Latinx, Central and South American, Caribbean, and Indigenous communities.

We’re kicking off the month with Bienvenida: Kicking Off a Celebration of Us! — an opportunity to come together, enjoy snacks and crafts, build community, and celebrate our shared cultures.

🦅 I Am Solano: Molecules 🧫, Mohawks💇‍♂️, Menageries 🐘, and Magic Swords ⚔️– Meet Professor Commodore “Comm” St. Germain

Most people probably don’t expect a down-to-earth dude rocking a mohawk when they walk into the classroom of Chemistry Professor Dr. Commodore St. Germain — a published biochemistry researcher. 🔬

Comm (as he’s commonly known) is far from the stuffy professor trope of Hollywood. But don’t let the chill personality fool you — he knows his stuff! Proudly holding a PhD from UC Davis in Biochemistry, Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (try saying that three times fast) 🎓 with top honors at the universities he attended

But becoming a professor wasn’t a straight path.

Comm began at a community college, but dropped out soon after. Over the next decade of self-exploration, he had various jobs — including 🐘 elephant keeper at the zoo 🐘 (Yes, really!) and bar tending (not at the same time, of course). With all this real-life experience gained, he gave college another shot.

A second beginning that started here at SCC. 🧪 After Solano, Comm transferred to San Francisco State, graduating top of the College of Science and Engineering before going to UCD for his doctorate. Then, he joined our payroll back in 2019. 🦅

Today, Comm aims to make chemistry and education fun and achievable! He hopes students know that professors desire to help students succeed and move on to grander things, not hold them back. ❤️ He also helps support students in the MESA Center and various campus groups.

If he could teach a make-believe class, it would be “Culinary Chemistry 101: Intro to everyday chemistry and its role in cuisine”. To help students grasp chemistry through real-world applications while improving their chef skills. 🍳

Outside of work, Comm can be found playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild 🎮, watching anime, reading Brandon Sanderson novels 📚, and “goofing off” as he calls it.

Talk about work hard, play hard! ✨ Comm is someone who knows the power of dedication and knowledge! 🧠
