How does the location of a grain processing facility impact the price farmers receive for their crops? That's the question NDSU graduate student Manoj Datta is helping answer.

As a master's student in Agribusiness and Applied Economics, Manoj analyzed more than 26 million grain price observations from nearly 3,000 grain elevators across the United States to understand how soybean crush facilities and corn ethanol plants influence local grain markets.

His research found that farmers located near processing facilities often receive higher prices for their grain, generating hundreds of millions, and in some years, billions, of dollars in additional revenue nationwide. These findings provide valuable insights for farmers, rural communities, and policymakers as they consider future investments in agricultural infrastructure.

At NDSU, students don't just study agriculture; they conduct research that helps shape its future. If you're ready to tackle impactful research, explore a degree with us: https://www.ndsu.edu/agriculture/agribusiness-applied-economics

Abigail Banitt is currently an intern in our department! She is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Business Administration while also working toward a certificate in Business Analytics.

During her first few weeks as an intern, Abigail has researched the varying definitions of rurality and explored the challenges and implications that arise from differing interpretations. She has also expanded her understanding of agricultural technology and its relationship to rural economic development. Through this work, she has gained a new perspective on the world around her.

She encourages students who are passionate about helping others and solving complex problems to consider taking agribusiness courses. She is excited to continue learning and growing throughout her internship experience!
