American Indian Public Health Resource Center

American Indian Public Health Resource Center The American Indian Public Health Resource Center provides services to Tribal Communities to address public health issues.

Mission: To partner with Tribal communities to support health sovereignty. The mission of the American Indian Public Health Resource Center (AIPHRC) is to address American Indian public health disparities through technical assistance, policy development, self-determination feasibility analysis, education, research, and programming in partnership with tribes, in North Dakota, across the Northern Plains, and the nation. Our vision is engaging and partnering with tribes to improve the delivery of culturally appropriate public health services and functions in American Indian communities. The AIPHRC is enabled by a multifaceted program and team approach to assist each tribe in their service priorities. At the heart of the AIPHRC’s philosophy is respect for tribal authority, autonomy, and self-determination. AIPHRC’s goal is to improve health systems, access to services, and health outcomes in these rural, impoverished communities by providing technical assistance that includes public health services and programming, research, education, and policy. The tribes can also be provided with self-determination tools, including the 638 Toolkit, as a template for assuming the management and control of health services.

Today, on the National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools, we honor and remember the children who were taken from their families and communities, those who returned home, those who never returned, and the families and generations who continue to carry their stories.

The AIPHRC is honored to share the story of an orange floral Jingle Dress and beadwork created by White Earth Tribal Elder Sandra Berlin (Star Woman), currently on display at the White Earth Nation Headquarters.

**An excerpt from Sandra’s reflection:**

“This dress was created to Honor, and to Never Forget the Children and their Families that endured the pain and suffering alone.

I am the Daughter of parents (and aunties and uncles) that were forcefully taken from their homes, brought to boarding schools, destinations unknown, far away from anything familiar or loving.

I can only imagine what my dear Grandmother Isabelle went through, as she had all but two of her 15+ children removed from her home. Not knowing where her children were, what they were doing and when they might be reunited.

The trauma experienced from Boarding School, is still being felt today. Many lack a positive self-identity, connection to community, culture, and access to trauma informed resources.

From my experience, in working from within the Indigenous community and larger community, to address these needs, and begin to make changes, community members and public services need to be educated and become aware of the trauma that has been experienced, acknowledging the truth about this deep dark stain in our history.

Community leaders need to work together to learn from, and empower Indigenous leadership, to offer trauma informed, supportive services to advocate for healing and wellbeing in Indigenous communities.”

We are honored to share that the American Indian Public Health Resource Center (AIPHRC) has been selected to present "Engaging the Next Generation Through Food Sovereignty" at the 2026 Alaska Food Festival & Conference, taking place October 16-18.

This is an exciting opportunity to highlight the Indigenous Food Sovereignty Emerging Leaders Program (IFSELP) and share how youth are engaging with food sovereignty initiatives. We look forward to learning alongside others strengthening Tribal food systems and building new relationships with community members and Tribal-serving organizations.

If you'll be attending the conference, we'd love to connect. Stop by our session and say hello!

The AIPHRC team had the opportunity to present at the 2026 National Tribal Health Conference, focusing on food sovereignty, the Indigenous Food Sovereignty Emerging Leaders Program (IFSELP), and the importance of investing in Indigenous youth and community strengths to build workforce capacity.

We were also honored to be joined by three IFSELP cohort members, who shared their experiences and reflections on participating in the program.

It was great to reconnect with our cohort members and engage with community leaders from across Indian Country, learning more about the impactful work taking place in Indigenous communities.

Miigwech/Pidamayayapi/Thank you to the Gila River Indian Community for welcoming us onto your homelands. We also extend our gratitude to the National Indian Health Board for the opportunity to share AIPHRC's work and for hosting an outstanding conference.
