“I’ve had to have some hard conversations,” UConn coach Jim Penders said. “We have juniors that I thought would have an opportunity to get drafted, mainly pitchers. But we also had an infielder who’s a Cape Cod League All Star and you know we expected to lose him. So, Friday I had a conversation with a middle infielder that we pretty much recruited to replace Christian. We’ve talked to recruits about maybe taking a gap year and waiting.

“It’s definitely weird not knowing what is going to happen."

“I have a good coaching friend down in Texas who had 15 seniors this year, and signed 18, so he’s going to have to cut people, or re-direct recruits to junior colleges if they are high school signees,” Hanks said. “Beyond that, obviously the opportunity to play at a lot of places has changed dramatically.”

After the coronavirus pandemic wiped out the 2020 college baseball season, players at every level were granted an extra year of eligibility.

Our program is for uncommitted high school graduated seniors, college transfers, and anyone looking to take a gap year. Due to this recent pandemic, college baseball/softball programs will have a huge influx of players for roster spots.

DPGA athletes have option to take college courses and nearby housing is available. DPGA has full access to 17,000 sq ft indoor training facility including 2,600 sq ft newly outfitted weight room. The NCAA’s decision to give an extra year of eligibility to spring sport athletes might not have as big of an impact as a shortened MLB Draft will on college baseball rosters for next season.
