Many would agree that being a college student, a high school student, president of the STEM Club, vice president of Phi Theta Kappa leadership, and doing research at The Jackson Laboratory on ovarian cancer and RNA sequencing—is a lot to handle all at once. Somehow, Garance Herve balances everything with tact and perseverance.

When Garance and her family first moved to Connecticut two years ago, they weren’t sure how Garance’s schooling would work out. The high school Garance would have attended didn’t have the classes she needed—yet she adapted. By moving to high school online, Garance now had the time to enroll in Connecticut State Community College's Dual Enrollment Program, which allows high school students to get a head start by taking college-level classes while they are still in high school. By the Fall 2026 semester, she had gotten involved with the PTK Honors Society, the STEM Club, and, through the encouragement of faculty like Professor Kirstin Cullinane, had been accepted into a year-long research internship at the renowned research center, Jackson Laboratory, in Farmington, Connecticut.

When asked about her goals, she said, “I originally wanted to be an engineer, but as I found out more about the medical and research side of STEM, I fell in love with it. I never knew the opportunities that were available to me, and I never would have if I hadn’t reached out and tried new things, met with faculty members, or gone to club meetings.”

And now, with hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon and researcher, Garance is well on her way to achieving her dreams. We are so proud of all you have accomplished so far, Garance! You’ll always have a home at Tunxis.

Founded and advised by Tunxis Professor Kelly Mann, the Healthy Minds Club has grown into a community on campus focused on connection, well-being, and authenticity. The club’s president, Xander, and vice president, Ari, both spoke about how much they’ve seen people come out of their shells at the club meetings, which are held every Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Room 6-272.

“I think one of the things that makes the club so accessible is that people can just hang out,” said Ari. “They only have to speak when they feel ready. And I do love when they open up, because no one is going to judge them for what they say or who they are. We need clubs like this because that isn’t true everywhere you go, and this honestly is a safe space for people. That’s what it was for me when I needed a reminder of what healthy friendship looks like. The community I’ve found in this club is something I didn’t even know I was missing for a long time.”

Xander echoed the same sentiment. “If someone isn’t sure about joining, they can really just come and audit the club,” he said, laughing. “I came to my first Healthy Minds meeting just because I felt stuck. I needed to mix things up. Fast forward a few semesters and now I’m so close with so many of these amazing people. Between the mental health panel events and the end-of-semester pizza party, there are so many opportunities to connect. Even beyond the weekly meeting of discussing a topic as a group. This is a place that not only accepts me for who I am, but embraces me for it.”

We are so thankful for all the amazing clubs we have on campus, like the Healthy Minds club, that are a place of Belonging for so many.

Recently, the CT State Tunxis Office of Disability and Accessibility Services celebrated International Week of Deaf People with an interactive event focused on ASL and Deaf culture! 🤟✨

Students, faculty, and staff learned basic signs and fingerspelling. From practicing signing “Hello, my name is…” to learning about Deaf etiquette and communicating through an interpreter, the event was all about embracing the different ways we communicate, connect, and belong.

Attendees also left their initials in finger-spelling on the ODAS “Belong Board,” creating a lasting visual reminder of the connections made!

Thi Nguyen, a Tunxis Dental Hygiene student, has been on an impressive journey to reach where she is now.

Originally from Vietnam, she moved to the United States planning to start a career in finance—but she soon found that something wasn’t working. Thi wanted to find a profession she felt mattered to her. Where she felt she belonged and her skills could be put to their best use.

Through friends, she heard about CT State Tunxis—specifically about the Dental Hygiene Program—and so she gave it a shot. After enrolling in classes, she was immediately impressed by how welcoming the Tunxis community was to people who were new to the area. She found a community that welcomed her for who she is, taking full advantage of the office hours and engaged faculty at Tunxis, who she felt were “always there to help if she felt lost or needed help understanding something.”

Thi has been highlighted by students and faculty alike for her dedication, commitment, and ability to make a meaningful impact on the community. To highlight Thi’s hard work, Professor of Dental Hygiene Rachel Greene announced that Thi will be the recipient of the Sparkler Award! Which, as Greene stated, “celebrates a student who consistently demonstrates outstanding professionalism, teamwork, and leadership in the clinic through their interactions with patients, peers, and faculty.”

Now, with plans to continue as a healthcare professional, she looks forward to completing her bachelor’s degree after her time at Tunxis. Thank you for your commitment, insight, and impact on our community, Thi! Your future is bright.

Today, we want to highlight the talented David C. Jackson, a CT State Tunxis Guided Pathways Advisor, accomplished artist, and asset to the community!

Jackson was recently honored at the 2026 100 Men of Color Black Tie Gala & Awards Ceremony at The Bushnell in Hartford!

The annual event recognizes 100 outstanding men of color from across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts for their leadership, professional achievements, and contributions to their communities.

But Jackson’s work in the community doesn’t stop there. As an Artist of Color Accelerator (AOCA) Fellow, Jackson is partnering with Charter Oak Cultural Center through June 2027 to advance artistic work that promotes community engagement, cultural reflection, and social change.

We couldn’t be prouder and are, as always, very grateful to have such influential community members in our very own community at Tunxis! Congratulations, David! You’ve earned it.

Get ready for a solo exhibition by West Hartford artist Brian McClear!

Join us in experiencing Still Matters, an exhibition of contemporary still life paintings by Brian McClear. The opening reception will be on Thursday, October 1, from 5–7 p.m. in the Barnes-Franklin Gallery. Free and open to the public, it isn’t an event you’ll want to miss.
