On September 27th, we were fortunate to have UIU alumnus P.J. Grine (2015), Park Ranger at Cross Ranch State Park in North Dakota, join us remotely to share his career experiences with current students as part of our Field Science Speaker Series. Thanks to P.J. for his willingness to participate in the series, and to Dr. Jennifer Stoffel for organizing the event.

Can you see Comet NEOWISE from your location? It has recently transitioned from the morning to the evening sky and is visible low in the northwest after sunset for the mid-latitudes. Bring binoculars as the comet is fainter than the pictures suggest. It really does have to be quite dark to see it with the naked eye. You might also happen to catch a shooting star! If you have very dark skies, the center of the Milky Way may be viewed in the opposite direction, in between the constellations Sagittarius and Scorpius and flanked this summer by Jupiter and Saturn.

I’ll be riding on the Prairie Farmer Trail!

UIU’s Team Peacock crew is just days away from starting the first Virtual Ride. For the entire month of July, several UIU alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students have committed to ride their bikes, walk, run or be active!

While participating in RAGBRAI would have been ideal for this group, Team Peacock’s Virtual Ride has really brought the entire UIU community together. Currently, 112 people have committed to more than 13,000 miles – INCREDIBLE.

The best part? All proceeds from registration are directed to the UIU Counseling and Wellness Program. There’s still time for you to join this initiative. For more details or to sign up today, visit uiu.edu/TeamPeacock.

Check out Anna James presenting her poster!

As we wrap up the School of Arts and Sciences during this month, today we dive into the Biology and Chemistry departments! First, We have Anna James presenting her senior project Assessing Cold Water Communities as an Indicator for Suitable Stocking Locations for Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) during the poster session at the Iowa Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.

The Senior Project course at Upper Iowa University provides a unique opportunity for undergraduate Conservation Management, Life Science, and Forensic Science majors to gain experience conducting and presenting their own independent research projects. Students select a research topic of interest and work with a faculty member during a semester-long class. Conservation Management major, Anna James, selected a project that assessed the stream fish community of the Upper Iowa River watershed in order to determine possible stocking locations for Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis. Anna’s novel approach to predicting Brook Trout distributions could ultimately influence recovery efforts for this species in the Driftless area of Iowa. To promote this research, Anna was asked by her project advisor, Dr. David Ruppel, to present her findings at the Iowa Chapter of the American Fisheries Society annual meeting.

UIU Students and alumni are doing amazing things in during their time in the School of Arts & Science. For more fun stories, follow us on Instagram today as we take a look at three amazing student experiences!
