We’re putting the word out! 📣

We’re excited to share an incredible opportunity for STEM and engineering faculty, Service Learning partners, and students. AMT (The Association for Manufacturing Technology) is hosting IMTS 2026 in Chicago this Sept. 14–19, and the Smartforce Student Summit offers free, hands‑on learning experiences in robotics, CNC machining, automation, digital twins, Industry 4.0, and advanced manufacturing careers.

Students will have access to interactive classrooms led by FANUC, Mitsubishi Electric, and other industry leaders, plus live demonstrations, simulations, and networking with more than 60 exhibitors shaping the future of manufacturing.

If students or faculty are traveling as part of a designated Service Learning project, travel funding is available.

Registration is free for students and educators, and group registration is open even without a final headcount.

Honors students, we have a special opportunity just for you! 🌟

Join the Service Learning Initiative for a Lunch & Learn on Thursday, September 3rd from 12:30–1:30PM in GEAR 258. This session is designed specifically for Honors students who want to explore how service learning can enhance their academic experience, strengthen professional skills, and create meaningful community impact.

Enjoy free pizza and drinks while learning how service learning courses can help you earn Honors credit through hands-on, community‑based projects. We’ll share upcoming course offerings, walk through how service learning connects classroom learning with real‑world challenges, and highlight ways these experiences can support your academic, personal, and career goals.

Nonprofits and community partners, we’d love to have you join us for Service on the Hill this August📣

The Center for Community Engagement is excited to co‑host the first‑ever Service on the Hill with OSIL this year. This new pilot event is designed to support Northwest Arkansas nonprofits and community organizations who want to connect with students but may not be able to participate in Razorbash.

Service on the Hill will take place Friday, August 21 from 10:00AM–1:00PM in the Union Mall. Organizations will be provided tents, tables, chairs, music, and food to help encourage student traffic. Groups are welcome to bring swag, giveaways, and information — volunteer sign‑ups and mailing lists are encouraged.

If you work with a nonprofit or community organization seeking volunteers, visibility, or student engagement, we’d love to have them join us.

Organizations can register through Tuesday, August 18 at 5PM on HogSync: cglink.me/2uB/r402567.

✨ Teaching Camp Highlights! ✨

Last Tuesday, the Teaching and Faculty Support Center hosted their annual Teaching Camp at the Jones Center, and the Service Learning Initiative was proud to be apart of that day!

We facilitated a morning panel featuring Elizabeth Lindly (PBHL), Rogelio Garcia Contreras (SEVI), and Peter Norman (LAW), who shared insights on community engaged teaching and student impact.

In the afternoon, Service Learning hosted a table at the Teaching Fair, answering faculty questions about the Service Learning designation. We are always grateful for opportunities to connect with instructors across campus and support innovative teaching.

🇮🇹 A wonderful visit to the University of Arkansas Rome Center!

This summer, our Service Learning Director, Dr. Lisa Bowers, visited the Rome Center to collaborate with faculty and community partners, explore service learning opportunities, and discuss ways to continue expanding meaningful experiential learning for University of Arkansas students.

Throughout her visit, Dr. Bowers met with Rome Center leadership, participated in workshops focused on designing high-impact service learning experiences, and visited community partners to strengthen international collaborations that connect academic learning with real-world impact.

We’re excited for what’s ahead as Service Learning continues to grow both on campus and around the world. 🌍❤️

✨ Interested in making a difference while earning course credit? ✨

COMM 41003: Communicating Body Image is now open for Fall 2026! In this hands-on course, you’ll collaborate with a team to design and implement a community-based body image mentoring program for adolescent girls in Northwest Arkansas.

Through this experience, you’ll strengthen your communication, public speaking, curriculum design, and facilitation skills while making a meaningful impact in the community.
