What an extraordinary evening.

Rev. Dr. Benjamin Chavis is an African-American activist, author, journalist, President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, and former National Director of the Million Man March Organizing Committee, joined us for a powerful conversation rooted in history and hope.

As one of the three remaining members of the Wilmington Ten, wrongfully convicted in 1971, Rev. Chavis shared a moving glimpse into his journey and reminded us:

✨ Don’t give up on your dreams.
✨ Stand up for what you believe in.
✨ Never let anyone or anything break your spirit.

His life is a testament to perseverance, faith, and courageous leadership.

We are grateful to Student Affairs for their continuous support in making this event possible.

Thank you, Rev. Chavis, for blessing our campus with your wisdom and legacy. We cannot forget our amazing community members who came out to support our event.

Some stories inspire us. Others ignite us to lead. Last night did both.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an impactful afternoon centered on the life and legacy of Rev. Nelson Johnson.

Mr. Shetterly guided us through Rev. Johnson’s journey as a civil rights activist in Greensboro, NC, from his early work with Youth Educational Services (YES) and the Greensboro Association for Poor People (GAPP), to his presence during the 1969 unrest at Dudley High School and A&T, including the historic military mobilization on campus.

His story also reflected the broader tensions of the 1970s, including efforts to confront Ku Klux Klan activity in North Carolina.

We are grateful to the Department of Intelligence Studies, Geospatial Science, Political Science, and History, in partnership with University Advancement, for making this meaningful program possible.

Rev. Nelson Johnson was a legend whose life continues to inspire reflection, courage, and dialogue.
