🌟 is back! 🌟
We’re kicking off our return to the series by spotlighting Sean Wiegers, an Honors College junior whose recent research took him into the heart of the Gulf this past May. Sean was awarded a short-term research grant from the Honors College to conduct fieldwork in Saudi Arabia, where he explored how the kingdom is leveraging multinational corporations and sports as strategic drivers of economic transformation 📝
His working thesis: “The strategic relationship and history of Saudi Aramco and Saudi Arabia has given the Kingdom a basis of economic success in which they are building on by continuing to leverage multinational corporations and sports entertainment under Saudi Vision 2030.” Originally set to include the UAE, Sean made a strategic decision to narrow his focus to Saudi Arabia, conducting in-depth research in Riyadh and Dhahran.
A junior pursuing triple majors in International Finance, Arabic, and Middle Eastern Studies, with a minor in Economics, Sean’s preparation has been years in the making. He’s studied at The American University in Dubai, lived in Jordan through the NSLI-Y scholarship, and completed Middlebury’s immersive Arabic program, taking on a full Arabic-only summer.
🎓 One of the milestones in his Arabic journey? Immersive Arabic III with Dr. Paula Haydar—his first Arabic course at the University of Arkansas, and the one that confirmed his commitment to the language.
💡 Sean’s advice to fellow students: “Choose a foreign language and stick with it. The world is becoming more interconnected, and proficiency in another language will pay dividends in the future.”
🌍 Looking ahead, Sean hopes to work with a multinational corporation operating in the Arab Gulf, using his cross-cultural and linguistic skills to help bridge business and cultural divides between the U.S. and the Middle East.
كل التحية والتقدير لك يا شون على هذا الإنجاز الرائع—ونتمنى لك دوام التقدّم والنجاح في رحلتك الأكاديمية والمهنية! 🚀👏
