PUTNAM COUNTY JUVENILE PROBATION DEPARTMENT
JOB TITLE: JUVENILE PROBATION OFFICER
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology or a related field, or a minimum of one year’s experience in criminal justice. Bachelor’s degree preferred (but not required). Must possess a valid driver’s license.
HOURS/DAYS OF WORK- Monday-Friday (with every other Friday off) 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Half hour lunches, except for the Friday scheduled to work will be 1 hour lunch. Will be available evenings/weekends to handle on-call emergency situations in the department (this will alternate between probation officers).
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The individual will be responsible for the following:
1. Supervising those juveniles Court Ordered on probation and assuring those juveniles are complying with all Court orders (rules of probation, community service, counseling, parent project, wraparound, attending school regularly, etc.). Also, maintaining constant communication with the parents, preferably by office visit, but if unable to attend at least by phone contact.
2. Completing appropriate paperwork for those juveniles Court ordered on probation (rules of probation, community service paperwork, medical forms, release forms, house arrest forms, case notes, etc.).
3. Filing probation violations on those probationers who violate the terms of their probation or issuing consequences to those probationers who violate probation, but do not necessarily need to go back to Court.
4. Maintaining regular contact with the probationers thru office visits, home visits, school visits, phone contacts, curfew checks, etc.
5. Administering drug screens to probationers, sending the specimen to the lab (if appropriate) and submitting the cost of the test/lab to the probationer’s court costs. Maintaining regular case notes in the computer/probationers file.
6. Making appropriate referrals to other county programs if/when appropriate (counseling, psychiatrist, WRAP, MAKE THE GRADE, etc.).
7. Completing pre-sentence investigation reports as Court ordered.
8. Completing Ohio Youth Assessments (OYAS) as needed.
9. Assuring those juveniles Court ordered to pay restitution are making regular payments to their victim and establishing an appropriate payment plan.
10. Attending Court hearings as scheduled (probation violations or new cases).
11. Placing probationers on House Arrest (EMHA) and monitoring the probationer’s status - (hooking up their ankle bracelet, putting appropriate documents into the computer and completing appropriate paperwork with the probationer/family).
12. Maintaining appropriate contact with law enforcement agencies, Job & Family Services, counseling agencies, residential placements, schools, crime victim services, etc.
13. Must make appropriate mandated referrals to Job & Family Services (physical/sexual abuse, inappropriate living conditions, etc.).
14. In the event of suicidal ideation with a probationer, must follow emergency procedures; specifically contacting counselor and/or having them transported to hospital for an emergency evaluation.
15. Making appropriate referrals for those juveniles requiring out of home placement (JRC, DYS and other placement options). Also, maintaining appropriate contact with the placement agency and the probationer/probationers family while in placement.
16. Arranging for transportation for juveniles to and from detention/placement facilities.
17. Taking care of truancy for all Putnam county schools; specifically, monitoring a child’s attendance from the time a truancy referral is given until the end of the school year. This will include possible contact with the child and his/her parent/guardians. Submitting appropriate paperwork to the prosecutor’s office and making appropriate court referrals, if/when necessary.
18. Attending trainings/ as needed.
