We are starting a series to highlight some of our undergraduate research in Biology. Hailey Schlabach began studying protist communities during the 2025-26 academic year for her Honors Thesis. She has taken her interest in protists and her love of scuba to dive into a new project, which assesses protist communities at varying depths on both manmade and natural surfaces in Gilboa Quarry in Gilboa, OH. Her study focuses on the area around Nemo’s Garden, the first freshwater agricultural biosphere in the United States, which allows crops such as basil to be grown 20 feet below the surface. Nemo’s Garden was installed in the Gilboa Quarry in July of 2023, in partnership with the Ocean Reef Group, and its sister structure can be found in Italy. Hailey’s project seeks to understand how artificial underwater biospheres interact with and impact freshwater microbial food webs.

It's the first day of classes at the University of Findlay, and even the caterpillars at the Rieck Center are sporting their Oiler colors! This is a milkweed tussock moth (Euchaetes egle), or milkweed tiger moth. Like monarch caterpillars, the caterpillars of these moths feed on milkweed, in addition to dogbane, and use chemical defenses acquired from their host plants (cardiac glycosides) to protect themselves from predators, such as bats. These striking caterpillars retain their orange and black stripes as adult moths, and will have gray wings. These caterpillars are common to find in late summer, so if you're out walking the trails, take a peek at some of our milkweed patches and you will likely spot a few!
