Juneteenth: Black Independence Day

Juneteenth: Black Independence Day

The holiday, which is recognized in 46 states and the District of Columbia, gets its name from the date of June 19, 1865. This is the day that Union Major General, Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce, more than two years late, that all African-American slaves in the state were free in accordance with President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Texas was the last state in the Confederacy to receive word that the Civil War was over and that slavery had been abolished.

A message from President Lapidus:

Like so many of you, I have been deeply affected by the events of the past week across this country. The tragic killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis has reopened unhealed wounds, and compels us to reflect, and to act.

The anguish that is heard across our country today is fueled by deep-seated, institutionalized injustice that energizes racism, persecution and brutality. We must do better as a society, recognizing that Black lives matter, and that justice for all is at the very foundation of what this country should represent. We must all take a stand against ignorance and hate as it is a direct attack on our central values of tolerance, compassion and inclusion.

As so many cities erupt into violence, I encourage all of us to look at our own communities and explore peaceful ways we can reshape the world around us. Our campus community can be part of this solution by renewing our commitment to promoting equity and justice, and to building a world where opportunity is not limited by the color of one’s skin. Our Leading for Change efforts, including the principles of education justice and being a student-ready campus, are embedded in the strategic plan that is now taking shape as our roadmap for the coming years.

The work is essential, and involves all of us. We must do better if we are to create the just, inclusive, and safe society that all of us deserve.

Sincerely,

Richard S. Lapidus

Kristen Downey and Tom Hamilton met in Russel Towers in the fall of 1988! I was visiting a friend on Kristen’s floor when I first saw her and had a feeling that I was going to marry that girl! I soon found out she was in a long-term relationship already. I thought oh well and carried on. By spring I found out she was newly single. We were in English Comp 2 class together and found out we had a lot of the same likes in music, sports and family. We briefly dated, nothing serious, and then went our separate ways for the summer. When we returned in the fall of 1989 I learned she began dating someone from her hometown. Again, I thought oh man, oh well…. And that was that. Fast forward to the fall of 1991 Kristen and I ended up in the music minor program together (that Kristen initiated on campus) and in a music arts class a few times a week together. As the semester went on she told me she was single again and we began to date, again very briefly starting the night of the Christmas concert that we both performed in. I was in the Jazz band and she was in the Chorus. When the semester ended, again we headed back home. Her on the north shore and me on the south. The great divide! She then, sadly decided to give it another go with her ex-boyfriend and that was it for me and I thought it just wasn’t meant to be. I moved on with my internship and career as did she. Somewhere in 1995 I had given her a random phone call. Who knows why, I was dating someone else at the time. Kristen had broken up with her boyfriend by this time and told me she now knew she wanted to marry me and for whatever reason, I decided to say no and stay in the relationship I had just begun with someone else. Fast forward to the spring of 2007. Both of us were now divorced from other people and we reconnected. She wrote me a letter not too long after that phone call in 1995 saying if I was ever to look for her in the future and couldn’t find her, to find her Dad because he will never move and he’d tell me where to find her. In 2007 I looked him up. Sadly he had passed away and my heart sunk. I knew from many years earlier she loved her Dad so much and it must have broken her heart that he was gone. What I had found was a webpage for a charitable event in her Dad’s memory and her contact information was there. I called and we have now been married for almost twelve years with four children and two dogs and yes I dragged her to the south shore! Our two oldest are both on the FSU campus right now in the Criminal Justice and Computer Science programs consistently on the Dean’s list! Our two little ones are already planning their time at The Burg! So there it is, the abridged version of how we met and married at FSC so long ago yet feels like yesterday. I knew the very first time I saw her she was the Love of my Life, I just didn’t know the road was going to be so long and winding to get there. I am so thankful it did and it all started at The Burg. :-) Tom Hamilton. Kristen Downey Hamilton FSC ’93 FSC ‘92 Comm/TV Elementary Education #FSLoveNest
I have a child that attends the school. I was told that there is a page for the students to sell college books on. I've sent a note to the school but NO response. Does anyone know anything about it?
Received my donation call tonight. Spoke with a nice man Miguel. He asked some questions about college life during my time. It was awesome to share some stories with a new generation. He did such a great job I doubled my donation! Good luck to Miguel and others doing the campaign!
