From MSU College of Human Medicine student to pediatrician, public health scholar and community leader, Dr. Gurbaksh Esch has built her career around caring for children and making a difference well beyond the hospital walls.
A 2018 graduate of MSU College of Human Medicine and a former “Flintstone,” Dr. Esch completed her pediatric residency at Beaumont in Royal Oak, now Corewell Health East. Today, she serves as a pediatric hospitalist at Hurley Medical Center, caring for children and families throughout our community.
Her passion for public health led her to become the inaugural scholar of the Alice Hamilton Scholar Program through the Pediatric Public Health Initiative, led by Dr. Mona Hanna. During the two-year program, she earned her Master of Public Health through MSU College of Human Medicine.
Dr. Esch continues to expand her impact through education and community leadership. In May 2026, she was named director of the Leadership in Community and Public Health certificate program at MSU College of Human Medicine’s Flint Campus. And now, she is taking on another important leadership role as President-Elect of the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
We’re proud to have Dr. Esch at Hurley, caring for our youngest patients while helping advance pediatric care, public health and the next generation of community leaders across Michigan.

Congratulations to Andrea Wendling, MD, FAAFP for being named to the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) Advisory Council. In addition to practicing family medicine at Munson Healthcare Boyne Area Health Center, Dr. Wendling serves as Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of Rural Health Curriculum at the Michigan State University Department of Family Medicine.
The RHTP Council will provide insight on rural health priorities, review program progress and offer recommendations to Michigan Department of Health & Human Services leadership.
