On September 24, Drs. Crawford and Makowski, alongside graduate student Cate Dill, traveled to Montgomery to attend an Alabama National Register Review Board meeting. While in the capital, the group extended their educational excursion with visits to the Alabama Department of Archives and History’s Museum of Alabama and—leaning into Cate’s specific research interest in music history—the iconic Hank Williams Museum! A fantastic blend of public history, archives, and local culture.

This summer, Dr. Crawford worked with the Alabama Department of Archives and History as a content specialist and workshop organizer for the Alabama History Institute in Huntsville. 🏛️

The institute brought educators together to explore Huntsville’s history through primary sources, historic sites, museums, and conversations with historians and preservation professionals. Throughout the workshop, participants considered how landscapes and the built environment can serve as primary sources while developing new approaches to helping their students “do history.”

Participants also had the opportunity to work with Cait Monroe, a graduate of UNA’s M.A. in Public History program and Manager of Special Collections at the Huntsville–Madison County Public Library’s Archives and Special Collections!

Dr. Crawford has worked with the Alabama History Institutes since 2018, contributing to programs in Florence, Decatur, and Huntsville.
