Last night, UNA had its annual University Awards Gala which recognizes graduating seniors for a variety of accomplishments. Our recipients were Olivia Morris: CASE Dean’s Award, Helena Heiberger: Outstanding Academic Achievement Award – Biology, and Amber Prescott: Outstanding Academic Achievement Award – Marine Biology. We are so proud of these ladies and their contribution to the Biology Department and research in their respective fields!

Students did a fantastic job communicating their research at conferences this past week! Students in the CODE Project presented their research at a symposium at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. Big congratulations to Sydney, Jared, and Avinash for placing in the Undergraduate category! 🎉👏🏼 Also, four CODE students (Sydney, Hanna, Scarlett, and Helena) went with their mentor Dr. Cynthia Stenger to present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research! We are so proud of our students for sharing their research. If you are interested in learning more or joining the CODE Project, reach out to Dr. Stenger.

Scholars Day was a success! Multiple students across the different departments had the opportunity to present research. Many biology students got to present their research from the CODE project under Dr. Cynthia Stenger and darter research under Dr. Kara Million. Thank you students for sharing with us your fantastic research posters!

Dr. Kassie Hollabaugh is an Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at the University of North Alabama. She is originally from Pennsylvania and completed a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee. She also completed a M.S. in Entomology and a Ph.D. in Entomology and Plant Pathology at the University of Tennessee. As a graduate student, she did research for the USDA. Her research interests include using fungal entomopathogens to control invasive insect species. She currently teaches BI 101 and BI 111 but plans to teach Entomology, Biostatistics, and possibly Plant Pathology in the future. Dr. Hollabaugh is looking to begin research here at UNA so if you are interested in studying the interactions between plants, bugs, and fungal entomopathogens reach out to her! Some of her hobbies include hiking and paddle boarding. Her tip for students is “Don’t overwork yourself but the more things you get involved in will make you a more well-rounded individual when you leave college such as the more groups you’re apart of, the conferences you attend, and the research you do”.

Amber Prescott, marine biology major, stumbled upon a grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) at Deibert Park showcasing abnormal behavior starting roughly a week before the freeze. It was constantly on the surface and unable to stay under water for long periods of time. Amber was curious about the root of the behavior and brought the fish to the UNA Biology Department last week where Dr. Ray and Dr. Kasl assisted her with dissection. Split fins were found along with bacterial build up on the stomach. They are still researching to find the cause of the behavior such as possible parasites, swim bladder disorder, or a disease/infection.
