Today, we’re celebrating .

Before we opened our doors — and before just about any other campus partner moved in — the horses at Temple Grandin Equine Center made their home in the Vida building and began serving our community through equine-assisted therapy and research. We love watching the work that they do, getting to know each of their personalities, and seeing them form a bond with their clients and staff alike.

To say we love horses at CSU Spur is, well... kind of an understatement ☺️

Here at the CSU Spur Temple Grandin Equine Center, Dr. Caiti Peters leads research into how horses can help autistic children build emotional regulation skills. As Research Director, she's led the Center's largest study to date, testing whether occupational therapy integrating horses can improve outcomes for autistic youth. The results of that study showed measurable improvements in emotional regulation, social communication, and social cognition, along with reduced irritability and hyperactivity.

Dr. Peters doesn’t just look at whether it works — she digs into the “why.” By measuring cortisol and electrodermal activity, they found that interacting with horses lowers children's physiological stress response, helping them stay calm, motivated, and engaged during therapy. She also studied the horses themselves, and found that working in these programs did not increase equine stress, making sure the sessions are mutually beneficial.

Coming up next, Dr. Peters is launching a new study on an equine-assisted learning program for young adults with Down Syndrome, designed to build life skills while boosting physical activity, social engagement, and cognitive stimulation. The pilot launches in Fort Collins in 2027.
