The Agricultural Water Quality Program (AWQP) protects Colorado state waters and the environment from impairment or degradation due to the improper use of agricultural chemicals while allowing for their proper and correct use.

As Colorado endures another wildfire season, we remind our community of the ways in which water quality is impacted by wildfire events.

While wildfires often create cause for concern of air quality, water quality is also directly impacted by fires. Both physical and chemical water health measures including sediment loads, pH, erosion, and more can be significantly altered by fire and impact downstream watersheds and irrigation water systems.

One way that the AWQP makes "every drop count" is our collaboration with and participation in the CSU-TAPS program.

A part of the Irrigation Innovation Consortium, TAPS is a sprinkler corn farm management competition focused on advancing precision agricultural management skills that gives participants the opportunity to work closely with soil moisture probe technology, test out irrigation management strategies, and support research on irrigation efficiency.

Undergraduate Research Assistant Kenzie Maruca shares her hands on experience assembling and deploying data loggers and how this experience has strengthened her understanding of the applications of technology in agriculture.

Data collection through the loggers allows for better quantitative comprehension of the physical field components, including soil, air, water, and more.

Agricultural Data Scientist A.J. Brown shares how applied monitoring technology supports agricultural production and research. With Data Logger technology, we are better equipped to, "monitor more with less."

Accurate measurement and monitoring allows us to manage. By developing low cost, modular sensors, we can expand the capacity of managing water quality in the context of a changing climate.
