CSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

CSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University strives to help animals, people, and the planet.

Research at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences has emerged from one grounded in the diagnosis and treatment of animal disease to one dedicated to improving animal and human health through a greater understanding of all living systems. While the veterinary research remains the heart of the College and forms the foundation of much of the innovative work at Veterinary Medical Center, societal demands create new frontiers for basic and applied science, medicine, and biomedical research. CVMBS differs from most US schools and colleges of veterinary medicine in that we offer undergraduate degrees as well as the Professional Veterinary Medical Program. CVMBS has three undergraduate degree programs (Biomedical Sciences, Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences, and Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology), 11 graduate degrees (five MS, six PhD), and the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine professional degree. All three undergraduate degrees prepare students for the workforce, for entry to graduate degree programs, and for entry into several professional degree programs including veterinary medicine, dentistry, and medicine. Students get to work alongside world-class faculty in an atmosphere designed to help you succeed at Colorado State University. Your hobby can become your research lab 🧗‍♂️

Environmental public health student Caleb is a rock climber who started wondering about the air quality at the climbing wall, where chalk dust is kicked up.

With mentor Luke Montrose, he used a wearable air-quality monitor to study what was actually in the air. And then they put the research into action, working with CSU’s Lory Student Center to make HVAC changes designed to improve air quality at the climbing wall.

A pretty cool example of taking something you notice in everyday life and turning it into research that makes a difference. Take a deeper dive into this story and how it all came together: https://source.colostate.edu/does-climbing-chalk-affect-air-quality/

The Boettcher Foundation has a long history of philanthropic support across Colorado. When it came to CSU’s new Veterinary Hospital and Education Complex, they saw more than a new building. They saw an opportunity to help advance the future of veterinary medicine.

We’re deeply grateful for their support and for the way they chose to honor Dr. Tony Frank by celebrating the people who have shaped veterinary medicine at CSU.

We're celebrating $3 million in NIH funding to advance Parkinson’s disease research 🙌

The work, led by Amanda Woerman and her lab, builds on their recent discovery of an unknown variant of Parkinson’s disease dementia. Now, they’ll spend the next five years studying this and what it could teach us about stopping disease progression.

We're thrilled to share that CSU has been selected as a partner institution in the PetSmart Charities Veterinary Fellowship program, which supports veterinary students pursuing careers that expand access to veterinary care.

Meet our first cohort of fellows:

🐾 Crystal Mateo Mendez
🐾 Sage Farrow
🐾 Lupita Rodriguez

This partnership builds on CSU’s longstanding commitment to accessible veterinary care and supports students as they build careers in community medicine. We’re excited to see where these three fellows take it.

5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣

Congrats to DVM student Morgan Berner-Jones on completing 500 surgeries before graduation! 🙌

Curious how she did it? Here are a few ways Morgan built her surgical experience:

🐾 Connecting with local shelters to gain hands-on experience
🐾 Finding a mentor (shoutout to Dr. Jodi Boyd!), who connected her with opportunities and helped build her skills
🐾 Seeking out surgery-focused externships, like Operation Catnip in Florida
🐾 Getting involved with organizations that provide high-volume or community surgery services, like Astraea Vet Clinic in Fort Collins

We're jumping for joy with you, Morgan!

VetFest brought together DVM student clubs for a super fun event last Friday! 🐾

We asked a few students to tell us about their organizations, what they’re all about, and why their clubs are worth checking out. Here’s a quick roundup! 💚💛

PhD toxicology student KP keeps it real in the newest video in our series highlighting CVMBS students and their journeys.

After enlisting in the U.S. Air Force as a pathway to support his education, KP discovered a passion for medical laboratory science that eventually led him to a PhD in toxicology at CSU.

📺 KP talks about what has shaped his journey. Watch at: https://bit.ly/3SXBNz0
