Can you tell me how to get to meaningful connections across generations? 💛

Last spring, Colorado State University became the first college or university in the nation to pilot 3G Mentoring, an intergenerational program that brings together preschoolers, CSU students, and older adults to learn from one another through activities inspired by Sesame Street.

Over eight weeks, participants met weekly at CSU's Early Childhood Center to watch short Sesame Street lessons and engage in conversations and activities centered on Cookie Monster's five Cs: connection, communication, confidence, creativity, and collaboration.

The result? Joyful conversations and opportunities to create meaningful connections across generations while providing opportunities for learning and growth at every stage of life!

As the program expands in Fort Collins this year, it's proving that some of life's best lessons happen when we take a stroll down a different kind of Sesame Street together. 💛

Learning goes beyond the classroom. 💙

This semester, first-year OTD students connected with older adult community members through experiential community labs, bringing course concepts to life through meaningful conversation and collaboration.

These hands-on experiences help students build clinical reasoning, communication skills, and confidence while learning directly from the lived experiences of community members. In turn, community members play a vital role in shaping the next generation of occupational therapists and strengthening connections with CSU.

It’s one of the many ways CSU OT blends community engagement with education to prepare thoughtful, compassionate practitioners ready to make an impact.

Meet Caitlin Redstone, an outstanding Food Science & Human Nutrition Fermentation and Food Science Ram! 🍽️🐏

As a department ambassador and lab support assistant for FSHN 301, Caitlin loves sharing her passion for food science and helping fellow students succeed. Get to know Caitlin in this Q&A 👇

What does FSHN and your major mean to you?
FSHN means community. As an FSHN student, I am constantly surrounded by people who are invested in both my academic and personal growth and want to see me succeed. I also love that Food Science gives me the opportunity to share my love of food with others and show them the beauty and complexity of the science behind what we eat.

How have you gotten involved with FSHN and your major?
I have gotten involved with FSHN through the Food Structures and Functions Lab, where I have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience. I also provide lab support for FSHN 301 and serve as an ambassador for FFS, which has allowed me to connect with other students and become more involved in the FSHN community!

What communities or industries do you hope to positively impact after graduation?
I want to stay connected to food and the science behind it, along with the amazing people I have met throughout the way. I’d love to share my passion for food with others and help people see how interesting and important the behind what we eat really is

What is something CSU leaders, students, faculty, staff, or alumni might not know about you yet (but should!)?
I’m not sure that anyone “SHOULD” know this about me. But I used to come to CSU and to what is now the CSU Mountain Campus for sports and leadership camps when I was young. I told my mom that I was determined to go to school at CSU because I loved it so much. Well, that’s not how the cards fell….scholarship opportunities took me to a different land grant university (Montana State University). Therefore, I truly felt like it was a childhood dream come true to be invited to join the CSU faculty.
