The Africa Center for Sustainable Ecosystems and Societies Under Global Change research group invests in innovative and interdisciplinary research that cross-cut conventional disciplines in an attempt to tackle global environmental and sustainability issues. Specifically, The Africa Center members address complex issues of biodiversity, ecosystems, wildlife, livestock and human health and well-bei

The Africa Center members are actively involved in research, education, and collaborative engagement between US and African institutions to promote sustainable ecosystems and societies. We are pleased to announce that Monica Opoku, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Economics at CSU, has won our inaugural essay competition for her essay titled “Thinking the World from Africa: When Growth Forgot Nature.” She won a $300 cash prize for her essay.

"I’m grateful to receive this award for an essay that invites us to rethink growth and development in tandem with conservation from an African perspective," said Monica after winning the award. "Writing it reminded me how essential it is to center ecological costs in our economic models as a starting point, rather than treating them as afterthoughts. Many African communities have long understood the link between environmental stewardship and wellbeing, and I believe our policy conversations can only benefit from taking those insights seriously. I’m honored that the Center found value in this work.”

Congratulations, Monica!
