The Department of Art and Art History is excited to welcome visiting artist Jerónimo Reyes-Retana, who joins Colorado State University to teach in the Electronic Art and Photography areas.
Reyes-Retana comes to CSU from the University of Colorado Boulder’s Critical Media Practices program, where he is a Ph.D. candidate. His work crosses boundaries between art, technology and research, using creative practice to examine the systems and infrastructures that shape communities and environments. His practice is driven by “the examination of the politics of noise and the poetics of infrastructure shaping Latin American contact zones.” Much of his work is centered around the marginalized settlement of El Campo Pesquero de Playa Bagdad in Tamaulipas, Mexico, and the transboundary sonic violence experienced in the community due to their proximity to SpaceX’s Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas.
His work is interested in exploring what he describes as “regimes of (in)visibility,” and the ways critical media practices can be used to investigate systems and conditions that might otherwise remain unseen.
His installations illuminate the ways in which technological development and industrialization encroach upon the natural world and affect the individuals that live within it. He received the CIFO-Ars Electronica Award 2025 for his film installation Voidn in Resonce, which documents SpaceX’s impact on Playa Bagdad through the perspectives of a group of local individuals. Further, he has co-created a school in the community that brings artistic education and enrichment to the local community, bolstering their ability to document and share their own experiences.
