A huge thank you to Elke Tukker for visiting us to share her insightful presentation on collaborative, community-based research with the Xeni Gwet’in and Yunesit’in First Nations of the Tsilhqot’in Nation! 🌲🐴 

Her talk highlighted the vital role of environmental stewardship, relational perspectives, and Indigenous self-determination in natural resource management. We are so grateful for the opportunity to learn from her work and perspectives!

“A busy and exciting first week at Colorado State University!

This week marked the beginning of my M.S. in Conservation Leadership in the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University and I’m incredibly excited for what the next two years will bring.

I’m also excited to be joining the Fronteras Collective, where I’ll be conducting interdisciplinary research exploring community-based conservation, climate resilience, biodiversity, and livelihoods. I’m looking forward to continuing to develop these interests and better understand the relationships between communities, conservation, and the environments they depend on.

Beyond research, I’m thrilled to join the ASCSU as the Associate Director of Environmental Affairs. In this role, I’ll be helping lead campus-wide initiatives that advance sustainability and environmental conservation across CSU.

I’m grateful to be starting this next chapter and excited to see where it takes me.”

Join us for a presentation on collaborative, community-based research with the Xeni Gwet’in and Yunesit’in First Nations of the Tsilhqot’in Nation.

About the Research:
This project examines environmental stewardship commitments and challenges, particularly related to wild horses, and identifies pathways supporting self-determination, Nationhood, and responsibilities to ancestral homelands.

By bringing relational perspectives from Indigenous studies and geography into dialogue with natural resource sciences, this research explores how relationships with wild horses serve as a critical site where territorial claims, governance, and self-determination are enacted and (re)envisioned.

Using community-based methods —including photovoice and interviews—the study highlights relational, land-based perspectives on Indigenous self-determination in natural resource management.

🌲💧🔥 Leadership for Conservation Systems

How do you lead within a conservation system, especially when no single organization, sector, or individual is in charge?

That question guided our Conservation Leadership through Learning Program students during their first Immersion Week as we traveled throughout Northern Colorado exploring the interconnected systems surrounding two of our region’s most important resources: water and fire.

Throughout the week, students learned from practitioners working across nonprofit organizations, local government, community-based conservation, private enterprise, consulting, and land management. We explored how effective conservation leadership requires looking beyond individual projects to understand relationships, competing priorities, trust, collaboration, and the broader systems in which conservation happens.

A huge thank you to Evan Briscoe with The Ember Alliance ; Daniel Bowker with the Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed ; Bob Sturtevant with the Ben Delatour Scout Ranch; Bernadette Kuhn and Alice Conovitz with the City of Fort Collins ; and Brett Bruyere with Switchback2Summit Consulting for sharing their time, expertise, and perspectives with our students.

We also wrapped up the experience with a tour of New Belgium Fort Collins Liquid Center , exploring how sustainability, business practices, organizational culture, and human-powered core values can contribute to a larger conservation system.

Across every stop, one lesson kept emerging: conservation doesn’t happen in isolation. It depends on people who can build relationships, navigate complexity, connect organizations and communities, and lead across boundaries.

Shoutout to Billy Kinn for sharing his journey through the Master of Conservation Leadership program! 🌲

From day one, Billy has soaked up every bit of this experience 🥾✨ incredible field trips, hands-on learning, and the kind of adventures that make this program so special. He’s had the privilege of working alongside his amazing advisor, Jen Solomon 🙌, and has found such value through his work at the CSU Environmental Learning Center 🌿.

🏆 Big congrats to Billy on presenting his thesis research as a poster at Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Partners in the Outdoor Conference! What an accomplishment.

📚 Now it’s thesis crunch time this semester, and we know Billy’s got this. Wishing him the best as he wraps things up. The conservation world is lucky to have leaders like him! 💪🌎
