University of Maine at Fort Kent

University of Maine at Fort Kent Higher Education The University of Maine at Fort Kent sits atop Aroostook County, along the Canadian border in Northern Maine.

At UMFK, we encourage our students to pursue their greatest passions and find pleasure in helping them succeed. Our students are hands-on and thrive with experiential learning—many of our classrooms are outdoors. Acres of forests and miles of waterways serve as the learning board for our Biology, Environmental Studies, and Forestry students, and provide an endless playground for nature enthusiasts. We are Maine’s premier rural university and encourage each of our students along their educational journey. Discover more about what UMFK can offer you on our website, umfk.edu.

🇱🇻 Latvia came to UMFK!

UMFK Professor Scott Brickman recently took us on a journey to Latvia during a public lecture at the Acadian Archives. From colorful traditions and traditional dress to food, music, dance and language, Brickman gave attendees a glimpse into how Latvians celebrate the summer solstice in Riga and Liepaja.

Brickman's own ancestry has roots in Lativa and his lifelong work as a musician and composer threads its way back to the cultural connection to music throughout Latvian history.

With original photos, videos and a song or two, it was a fascinating look at Latvian culture! 🎶

Last Friday, as part of the 2026 UMFK Homecoming Weekend, we unveiled the UMFK 150th Anniversary Legacy Wall. The wall depicts thirty milestones from our nearly 150-year story, now on permanent display at the Blake Library. Thank you to the family of Richard I. Morin for the lead gift that made it happen, and to everyone who turned out to celebrate and dedicate a milestone. This wall belongs to all of us.

Couldn't make it but still want to dedicate a milestone? Please visit us online or contact Michael Elliot in the UMFK Advancement Office.

Thank you to all who came out for UMFK’s 2nd annual 9/11 Memorial Hike. It provided a beautiful moment of reflection to remember all who were lost on September 11, 2001 and to honor the hardwork and dedication of our first responders.

Please join us on Friday, September 11, 2026 at Lonesome Pine Trails for the second annual UMFK 9/11 Memorial Hike to remember those lost on September 11, 2001. 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of that tragic day.

Registration and check-in begins at 8:15AM and the hike promptly begins at 8:46, marking the exact time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in 2001. There will be various branches of law enforcement, first responders, and service men and women present. Others are encouraged to participate as well.

The memorial hike is free and open to the public. Participants are advised to wear appropriate footwear for trail conditions. Restroom facilities will be available inside the Lonesome Pine Trails main lodge. If you are unable to hike, but want to be present to show your support, you may view the hike from the deck at the Lonesome Pine Trails Lodge.
