The Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex at Indian River State College (IRSC) is the most comprehensive, technologically advanced public safety training facility in the nation. The 50-acre, eight-building Complex has gained national and international attention for its proactive approach to disaster prevention, response, recovery and relief. The Complex enables IRSC to combine criminal jus

tice, fire science, emergency management, humanitarian assistance, paralegal, public administration and human services education in one place for a coordinated response to all types of emergencies. This innovation in public service education provides students with access to quality instruction, integrating academics, technology and practical applications that lead to degrees and certifications in the public service sector

At a local level, the proximity of the Complex to public safety agencies helps Treasure Coast communities save money on continuing education and enables them to easily work together to fine-tune inter-agency response to hurricanes and other natural and man-made disasters. At a national level, specialized training and workshops attract thousands of public service professionals from around the nation. In partnership with the Department of Homeland Security, and other leading federal, state, and local agencies, IRSC held nuclear and radiation detection training at the Complex for the 2009 Super Bowl, and instructors for the advanced training served on the security team for the Presidential Inauguration in January 2009. Indian River State College is an equal opportunity/equal access educational institution: https://irsc.edu/human-resources/equal-access-equal-opportunity.html

We’re proud to highlight the success of our recent Active Shooter Hostile Events (ASHE) training hosted at Indian River State College’s Criminal Justice Institute in partnership with the Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education at the University of Miami.

This powerful multidisciplinary training brought together law enforcement and EMS professionals from across the Treasure Coast to train side by side in realistic, high-intensity scenarios designed to improve coordination, speed response times, and help save lives. Local coverage noted that the training focused on integrated response by law enforcement and EMS, and that it is part of the same program used to train Tallahassee first responders before the 2025 FSU shooting. ()

We are incredibly grateful for this partnership and for the opportunity to bring this level of training to our region. This was a huge success, and we look forward to building on this momentum as IRSC continues working to become a regional hub for this life-saving training. The Gordon Center partnership has already brought significant training value to The River, including at least $20,000 in training costs covered to support multiple advanced training courses.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible, especially our instructors, role players, partner agencies, and all those who participated.

The Criminal Justice Institute of IRSC would like to introduce to your our new Crime Scene Lab where recruits will participate in scenario-based/practical application training in Crime Scene Follow-Up Investigations. In this block, recruits will learn how to respond to, secure, and protect crime scenes, in addition to searching for and photographing, sketching, and collecting evidence.

In addition to the CJI’s Crime Scene Lab, Indian River State College’s Public Service Education Division now offers an Associate in Science Degree in Crime Scene Technology. In this program, students are prepared for employment in fields related to crime scene investigation and will learn the skills necessary to locate, preserve, develop, collect, analyze, and present physical evidence related to a crime with a focus on hands-on practical applications.
