The Fort Valley State University family mourns the passing of former First Lady Betty Jean Hubbard Rivers, a beloved alumna, devoted Wildcat and cherished member of our University family.

Mrs. Rivers served as FVSU’s First Lady from 2006–2013 alongside her husband, President Larry E. Rivers, Ph.D. During her tenure, she was deeply loved by our students and campus community, creating lasting memories through traditions such as the First Lady Betty Rivers’ Tea at Noon.

A 1973 graduate of Fort Valley State College, Mrs. Rivers remained a steadfast champion of her alma mater. Her love for FVSU and its students will continue to live on in "the Valley".

We extend our deepest condolences to the Rivers family and all who loved her. May her legacy continue to be a light for generations of Wildcats. 💙💛

In Fiscal Year 2025, Fort Valley State University generated $192.7 million in economic impact for Middle Georgia, supported 1,640 jobs and contributed to the long-term economic success of graduates across Georgia.
