In honor of Banned Books Week, TCU College of Fine Arts students designed their take on book jackets for historically banned books. After putting the designs to a vote, the following students were awarded recognition for their clever use of typography and design elements to convey the message of each work:

🥇 1st Place: Izzie V., BFA Graphic Design Junior - A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR’S COURT by Mark Twain

🥈 Runner Ups: Paola F., BFA Graphic Design Junior - THE RAINBOW by D.H. Lawrence; Sidney S., BFA Graphic Design Junior - WIDE SARGASSO SEA by Jean Rhys, and Sam S., BFA Graphic Design Junior - THE ADVENTURES OF AUGIE MARCH by Saul Bellow

🥉Honorable Mention: Emily A., BS Design Studies Junior - A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN by James Joyce

Since 2011, Graphic Design Senior Instructor Jan Ballard has coordinated the Banned Books Jacket Design Competition in collaboration with the TCU Library. All graphic design student submissions will be displayed in the Mary Couts Burnett Library Reading Room (October 12–16, 2026).

On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we remember the American service members who were held as prisoners of war (POW) and those still missing in action (MIA).

TCU alumna Darlene Sadler's ('68) story is a reminder of why this day exists. Her husband, Mitchell Sadler, was lost in Laos in 1970 during the Vietnam War. Like thousands of military families, Darlene was left with only the hope that Mitchell might still come home.

She wore his POW/MIA bracelet (pictured) every day, a small act that carried a lifetime of devotion. In her efforts to spread POW/MIA awareness, she became the South Texas coordinator for the National League of Families, an organization of relatives of the missing and captured. Darlene spent years pushing U.S. officials to share more information and give POW/MIA families answers.

Today honors the American POWs and MIAs who served, and the families, like Darlene, who never stopped waiting, never stopped asking, and never stopped hoping. 🕊️

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we're revisiting an archival moment from 2002, when TCU held a Candlelight Vigil to mark the one-year anniversary of the tragedy. That evening, about 400 TCU students, faculty and staff gathered to remember the victims and mourn as a community.

In his address to campus, Chancellor Ferrari said, "Many of us gathered on this site a year ago. Tonight, we unite the TCU community and rededicate ourselves to peace."

Twenty-five years later, that spirit of unity still resonates as we honor the victims, survivors, rescue personnel, and the resilience of a nation that will never forget that day.

55 years ago, activist and journalist Gloria Steinem stood on TCU's campus.

In March of 1971, Steinem spoke to a packed audience, debunking myths about women's equality and pushing TCU students to challenge campus policy, boldly calling for an end to dorm curfews and restrictions on visitation. In her lifetime, she became the face of second-wave feminism, co-founded Ms. Magazine, and fiercely advocated for women's rights.

After a full life, Gloria passed on peacefully this past Wednesday at the age of 92. Thank you, Gloria, for your courage, wit, and for being a part of TCU history.
