Who's ready for our first program of the year THIS SATURDAY? this week highlights our upcoming talk "Another Year Finds Me in Texas: The Civil War Diary of Lucy Pier Stevens".

When the Civil War is taught in schools, students learn about its two sides: North and South. But, it was never that simple. This month, Vicki Tongate joins us to discuss her book, Another Year Finds Me in Texas: The Civil War Diary of Lucy Pier Stevens, the edited journal of a 21-year-old Ohio woman stuck in Texas during the war. Stevens unknowingly provided a treasure trove of information on Texas history, women’s history, and Civil War history. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about an American caught between two worlds: living for one, yearning for the other, and loving both! Book signing follows lecture. Program is free.

Vicki Tongate taught as a full-time lecturer at Southern Methodist University for 16 years until her retirement in 2017. This book, Another Year Finds Me in Texas, was awarded a citation as one of the ten best books on Texas history in 2017 by the San Antonio Historical Conservation Society. Most recently, the book was named one of the top ten best-selling scholarly books of the decade for UT Press.

Staying in Keller, Texas, this week's focuses on the Keller History Museum!

The building itself, known as the Jarvies House, has been in Keller since 1926. Facing demolition in the 21st century, the Old Town Keller Foundation stepped in. They moved the house to a new location and opened it as a museum in 2013. Not only does the building host artifacts from Keller's history (including objects related to the railroad, the post office, and the school), but it also acts as a community hub, offering events, classes, and fun activities for all ages.

The Keller History Museum is located at 133, Bates Street, Old Town Keller, Keller, Tarrant County, Texas, 76248. It is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Admission is free, but there is a link to donate or become a member on their website. Although the museum offers many classes and events, one particularly exciting one happens on October 17th, with the Jarvies House turning 100 years old! Welcome back to yet another ! This week, we're in Keller, Texas, with the First Baptist Church of Keller.

The marker states that the church was founded in 1882 as the Keller Baptist Church. The people who came to found the church were from the Mount Gilead Baptist Church, which had been around since 1850, which was before Keller's establishment. The Keller Baptist Church symbolized the community's expansion along the rail lines, which was a common experience around this time in the state of Texas. It continues to operate in the modern day.

I hope you've been enjoying our first posts of the Fall 2026 semester! This week, we're ending our journey at The Art Dept. in Temple, Texas. For this , did you know that The Art Dept. offers a weekly event known as Art a La Carte?

The page for Art a La Carte on their website states that anyone can, "Walk in, browse the “menu”, and enjoy some casual creativity… no reservation or experience needed." They have a menu of different kinds of fun arts and crafts ranging from collages for the adults to "squish & sculpt" for the kids. Art a La Carte is a fun way for people of all ages to experience art without needing to sign up for a class or camp. They even offer studio space for those needing somewhere to work on their own projects!

Temple, Texas is helping us reintroduce yet another fan favorite from previous semesters: ! This postcard depicts the First M.E. Church in Temple, dated around June 9, 1910! Fun fact, the type of coloring seen on this postcard is known as the Ben Day process, in which shapes help create an illusion of color!

Welcome back to the first of the Fall 2026 semester! This week, we're focusing on the Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum!

The museum honors Temple's heritage as a railroad town. According to the webpage for the museum, it opened to the public in 1979 as the Railroad and Pioneer Museum. The non-profit organization that ran its daily operations sold it to the town of Temple in 1985 and gained its current name in 2000.

The Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum's hours range from 10AM to 4PM from Tuesday to Saturday. Their admissions range by age, with ages 0-4 being free, ages 5-12 being $2.00, ages 13-59 being $4.00, ages 60+ being $3.00, and active duty military gets in free with ID until September 7 of this year. The address is 315 W Ave B, Temple, Texas 76501. Their current and upcoming exhibitions include Gadgets Galore!, Homespun History, and StitchPUNK. Happy first day back of the Fall 2026 semester, TCU! Its also time for another , taking us to Temple, Texas, with the Temple Daily Telegram!

According to the marker, the name "Temple Daily Telegram" did not manifest until 1907. However, the paper's roots go back to 1881. Then, it was known as the "Weekly Times." Frank W. Mayborn's purchase of the Temple Daily Telegram in 1930 changed the paper's trajectory. Its dedication to fostering community and journalistic integrity made the publication prestigious. Even after Mayborn's death, his widow, Sue Mayborn, continues overseeing the Temple Daily Telegram's printing. The paper continues running to this day, honoring the Mayborn's and Temple's hard work.

For this week's , we return to Canton, Texas, to witness a place dedicated to local history that resonates internationally: the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial Plaza.

Although in Canton, Texas, the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial Plaza represents multiple cities in the county. According to the Memorial's website, "the mission of the memorial is to create and perpetuate a Memorial that honors the sons and daughters of Van Zandt County, Texas who left to fight for freedom and never returned." The museum portion of the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial Plaza is free and constantly expanding, currently featuring artifacts like am******on, ribbons, and uniforms. The website also features resources for veterans, including a written six part series on PTSD.
