26.2 miles is a long way to run on a surgically repaired foot and a medical student's schedule, but that’s what TCOM’s Sydney Fluker is doing as she takes part in the TCS New York City Marathon on November 1 to help people half a world away. Fluker is running to raise money for Nyaka, a non-profit organization in rural Uganda. You can help her hit her goal before the marathon.

Extraordinary work by TCOM’s Kayla Riley, who recently had an article published in the Annals of Hematology. Her work, “Evaluation of Non-Opioid Therapies for Pain Management of Sickle Cell Disease: A Literature-Based Review,” explored evidence-based, non-opioid pain management options for patients with sickle cell disease. She was mentored by Dr. Adenike Atanda and Dr. Rolake Neba from our UNT Health College of Pharmacy & Health Professions. Way to go, Kayla!

Exporting the osteopathic way to Austria. Dr. David Mason was recently invited to teach a three-day course overseas on integrating osteopathic medicine into medical practice in Austria. The chief medical officer for growth and development at UNT Health Clinical Practice Group and a TCOM professor brought new insight to an experienced group of physicians looking to learn more about how to use osteopathic medicine.

TCOM students traded their stethoscopes for hard hats and hammers. A group of 20 volunteers from our Christian Medical Association worked with Habitat for Humanity to help with the building of a new home. They put up interior and exterior walls and secured them to the foundation to make an extraordinary difference in our community. Great work!

Care Packages for a Cause is an initiative that saw students from all across UNT Health Fort Worth band together to help support the unhoused in Fort Worth and beyond. Spearheaded by students in our UNT Health Physician Assistant Studies, osteopathic, pharmacy, and PT programs, the effort involved collecting items and assembling the packages. Extraordinary work by TCOM students landed them on the front cover of the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine. Calista Hemarga and Ivan Marrufo teamed up with Dr. Asim Kichloo and Dr. Sandra Davis to research the important topic of “How can I differentiate delirium from altered mental status in hospitalized older adults?” The results found that Delirium is substantially underdiagnosed in geriatric patients. There was laughter, there were tears, and there wasn’t a better night as we celebrated Founders Day, one remarkable osteopathic physician and two dynamic supporters. Dr. John Bowling received the TCOM Founders Award, and Jay and Mimi Bonds were the Mary E. Luibel Service Award recipients. We had family members from our Founders, Dr. Nelda Cunniff, the first female to graduate from TCOM in 1974, and members from our classes of 1976, 2001, and 2016 to celebrate. It was a perfect evening to showcase TCOM’s 56-year legacy of excellence.

More phenomenal work pouring out of TCOM. Students Mithil Penta and Saichandra Kalvakota paired up with Dr. Robert Mallet to publish an article in Current Atherosclerosis Reports on the mechanisms that increase the risk of atherosclerosis in patients with PTSD. This could potentially affect 10 million Americans. Great stuff.
