Meet LaDonya Jenkins-Freeman, who will be leading next week's Business Acumen Series Seminar, "AI in HR: Practical, Ethical, and Responsible Use."

LaDonya Jenkins-Freeman is a strategic People & Culture executive, HR consultant, and organizational leadership expert with nearly three decades of experience across government contracting, corporate, entrepreneurial, and nonprofit environments. She currently serves as Director of Human Resources for DarkStar Intelligence and is the Founder of Perspicacity GovCon LLC, where she provides fractional HR leadership, organizational strategy, workforce development, compliance, and leadership consulting.

Throughout her career, LaDonya has held senior HR and corporate administration roles supporting organizations through growth, transformation, workforce challenges, and continuous improvement. Her expertise includes strategic HR management, organizational development, talent strategy, employee engagement, leadership development, HR analytics, and the responsible integration of emerging technologies into the workplace.

2026 Business Acumen Series: AI in HR: Practical, Ethical, and Responsible Use
Wednesday, October 28, 2026; 9am-3pm

Artificial intelligence is changing how HR professionals recruit, develop, support, and manage people. Additionally, AI can also provide a practical way to increase efficiency when HR responsibilities fall to an owner, manager, or employee who wears multiple hats rather than a dedicated HR professional.

This workshop provides a practical introduction to using AI for HR-related tasks, regardless of prior AI experience. Participants will explore applications across recruiting, employee communication, onboarding, development, performance management, and administrative tasks, with an emphasis on saving time and extending organizational capacity. The workshop will also examine ethical considerations including bias, privacy, accuracy, transparency, and human oversight, as well as common pitfalls and inappropriate uses. The workshop emphasizes practical decision-making over technical expertise and provides strategies for using AI efficiently while maintaining professional judgment and a human-centered approach.

Certified Medical Office Manager (CMOM)
Online, 5-8pm on the following dates in 2027: 2/9, 2/11, 2/16, 2/18, 2/23, 2/25, 3/2, and 3/4

The Certified Medical Office Manager (CMOM) course teaches the essential knowledge and competency standards for professional medical office management and administration. The competencies reflect the successful management of professional staff in settings where goals are technical, customer‑service oriented, compliant with government regulations, and financially accountable to a cost‑margin model. There are five modules offered in 24 hours of instruction:

-Managing a medical office practice
-Acquiring skills for personnel management when you are not in charge
-Understanding the financial models for success and sustainability
-Meeting compliance standards of the government programs and medical practice
-Payment models for insurance, contracts, managed care, and doctor credentialing

At the completion of the course, there is an online exam to obtain the certification. This course is offered in partnership with the Practice Management Institute.

Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Building Connection, Resilience & Belonging

This course will discuss ways teachers can help students understand, process, and manage their emotions. Through practical tools and reflective exercises, teachers will develop ways to teach students essential skills like self-awareness, stress management, and empathy to build healthier relationships and navigate challenges.

Participants will explore various methodologies for facilitating student emotional comprehension and regulation within this course. Utilizing reflective activities and functional resources, educators will cultivate strategies for instructing core competencies such as self-perception, emotional control, and interpersonal sensitivity, fostering improved social dynamics and resilience. Participants will cultivate functional methodologies for emotional comprehension, enhancing their professional interactions and student engagement to establish a more tranquil and cohesive educational setting.

Inquiry-Based Learning for Secondary Social Studies and Science Educators
Through four online class meetings and asynchronous coursework, participants will learn to design engaging, inquiry-based learning activities. Each session will focus on one of four core dimensions of inquiry: (1) developing questions and planning inquiries, (2) applying disciplinary concepts and tools, (3) evaluating and using evidence, and (4) communicating conclusions and taking informed action. By the end of the course, participants will have designed a complete inquiry-based mini-unit that they can use in their own classroom.

Increasing Student Engagement Without Increasing Teacher Workload
Course meetings: 10/13; 10/20; 10/27; 11/3 5:30-7:30 pm

Student engagement is one of the greatest challenges facing today's educators, yet increasing engagement does not have to mean creating more work for teachers. This hybrid professional learning course explores research-based instructional practices that promote cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement while fitting within teachers' existing planning routines. Participants will examine the science of engagement, learn practical strategies that require minimal preparation, implement techniques in their own classrooms, and reflect on student outcomes. Through collaborative learning, classroom application, and guided reflection, participants will develop a personalized toolkit of high-impact engagement strategies that can be implemented immediately.
