Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and former students of Dr. Max Futrell (pictured in the center), a former Criminology Department chair and professor emeritus, who passed away earlier this year.

Dr. Futrell served as the interim dean for the College of Social Sciences from 2001 to 2002. He was recognized for Outstanding Service with the Fresno State Criminology Alumni Association in 1994 and by the College of Social Sciences for his years of service from 1970 to 2006. He also received an honorary citation from President Bill Clinton.

Dr. Larissa Mercado-López, chair of the Department of Anthropology, was featured on a panel at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists with CSU Board of Trustees Chair Diego Arambula and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Junius Gonzalez to discuss how the CSU is working to reduce systemic barriers, provide culturally responsive support and improve outcomes for all students. 🐾 Way to represent! 👏

Congratulations to Fresno State's Alpha Delta Beta chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honors Society, on being named a 2025–2026 Best Chapter Award recipient! 🏆 🐾

The Best Chapter Awards honor chapters that are especially active on their campuses and in their communities and that exemplify the society's mission to foster scholarship and intellectual interest in political science. This marks the sixth time the chapter has earned this prestigious recognition.

A special congratulations to Political Science Associate Professor Dr. Everett Vieira, the chapter’s faculty advisor, for his extraordinary leadership, mentorship, and commitment to supporting our students. 👏

Dr. Jessica McKenzie, Professor of Child & Family Science, attended the 2026 International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology conference in Leuven, Belgium, alongside students Nena Cammon and Brieanna Servin. 🐾

Nena and Brieanna received the Best Poster Award, and for both students, it was their first time on an airplane and their first time traveling outside California! ✈️ 🌎

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and former students of Dr. Steven Walker, criminology professor emeritus and a pioneer in the field of victim advocacy, who passed away on May 16.

A visionary educator and dedicated philanthropist, he taught at Fresno State from 1989 to 1992 and returned in 1998. He later served as associate dean of the College of Social Sciences before retiring in 2012 as chair of the Criminology Department.
