ON THIS DAY IN BLACK HISTORY | OCTOBER 15, 1966

On this day in 1966, Sigma Man Dr. Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in Oakland, California, launching a movement that would leave a lasting impact on Black liberation, community empowerment, and social justice.

The Black Panther Party challenged systemic racism, advocated for police accountability, and established groundbreaking community programs, including free breakfast initiatives for children, health clinics, and political education programs.

Brother Newton's vision of self-determination, community organization, and collective action shaped generations of activists and showed the power of communities organizing to meet their own needs.

Today, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. recognizes this historic moment and the Black Panther Party's enduring influence on civil rights, social action, and community service.

The legacy of service, self-determination, and community empowerment continues.
