An outstanding Capstone showcase this year from our Sustainable Construction Management students. Truly one of the most innovative, hands-on, and professionally developed project presentations we have seen.

Students presented fully developed sustainable residential and marine infrastructure concepts integrating photovoltaic systems, high-efficiency HVAC solutions, green roofs, rainwater collection systems, renewable materials, sustainable waterfront development strategies, and resilient reinforced concrete applications for coastal and marine environments. Projects included sustainable residential homes and cabins featuring solar-powered energy systems, energy-efficient design, natural lighting optimization, green roofing systems, rainwater harvesting, engineered glulam structural systems, and environmentally conscious material selection focused on long-term performance and affordability.

Another team developed a highly impressive marine and waterfront infrastructure concept centered around sustainable boat repair and service operations, shoreline stabilization, vegetation-based erosion control, wave-energy dissipation using gravel systems, and durable reinforced concrete solutions for harsh marine conditions. The level of detail extended beyond engineering and construction into business planning and economic feasibility with truly entrepreneurial-level thinking.

In addition, some students fabricated and tested in labs sustainable reinforced concrete applications and innovative material solutions for future construction and infrastructure systems, combining technical research, sustainability principles, and practical constructability considerations.

What made the day even more meaningful was the participation and support from faculty members across the Department of Engineering & Sustainable Technologies and the College of Business, Engineering, Computational & Mathematical Sciences, along with professionals from partnering companies and industry teams.

Always at the forefront of innovation!!!
Today our Building Materials students tested an innovative hemp-FRP reinforcement sample: a promising sustainable technology for concrete applications.
This research began last semester thanks to some of our student interns, and today’s results were extremely positive.
Sustainable construction is a booming field, and our program continues to lead with hands-on learning and real research power.
This major is a true gold mine — a launchpad into one of the fastest-growing, most innovative, and highest-demand sectors in the entire engineering world.
Proud of our students, who are not just studying the future — they’re building it.

Our SCMT students wrapped up one of the most exciting and industry-ready labs of the semester with phenomenal results.

In Building Materials students designed, poured, and tested concrete specimens reinforced with steel and GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer), comparing them to an unreinforced control beam. Pure innovation.
Our GFRP-reinforced samples showed outstanding performance, highlighting the future direction of modern infrastructure:
• corrosion-free
• lightweight
• high tensile strength
• ideal for bridge decks, slabs, and coastal structures

This is exactly where the construction industry is heading: non-corrosive reinforcement for longer-lasting, more sustainable infrastructure — and our students are already working with it firsthand.

In another SCMT class students also built and load-tested bridge models, learning how failure modes develop under real loading.

This is experiential learning at its best: hands-on, rigorous, innovative, and directly connected to tomorrow’s construction technologies.

We had the incredible honor of hosting the Vice President and the Project Manager of Whiting-Turner (Baltimore Division) — the #2 largest contractor in the U.S.! 🇺🇸🏗️

They met with our Sustainable Construction Management students, sharing insights, career advice, and opening doors to internship and full-time opportunities.
