Today is the deadline of the Limerick contest!

How to Write a Limerick

You seed five lines in total, young poet.
Three anapests per line should sow it,
except the third and the fourth--
those come quicker, of course--
and rhyme AABBA, or you'll blow it.

Old Donne was often amused
At things that left others confused.
He was terribly clever,
But I think that he never
Liked leaving interpretive clues.

Ben Jonson preferred a plain style,
But seldom brings students a smile.
His lean verse and prose
Make some readers doze,
And others overtly hostile.

But some of us love to read both,
And I swear by my sincerest oath,
That if you persever,
In that grueling endeavor
The result is intellectual growth.
