Titan Capital Management

Titan Capital Management A upper division finance course dedicated to providing a real time and experiential education in equity and fixed income portfolio management.

The ASAP program at CSU Fullerton was created in 2010. It was designed to give students the opportunity to manage real capital across both the equity and fixed income markets. Fixed income was added in 2015 and the portfolio today stands at $1.3 million. In 2016, the program dedicated a physical space within the Mihaylo School of Business and Economics. A lecture hall and a separate meeting room f

or students was added and equipped with Bloomberg terminals. Students submit their portfolo recommendations to an advisory board for approval through out the academic year. At the conclusion of the year, a distribution is made back the university to support academic curriculums. Our motto as posted outside the lecture hall is, "The best return is giving back." This reminds students every day that they have a fiduciary responsibility of prudent investing on behalf of the university.

Message from Dear Sri:

Dear TCM Alumni and Friends,
I want to be the first to congratulate everyone on helping us be #1 for the Pepsico Dollar Challenge with over $56,790 raised. This accompanies the $5000 gift from Pepsico. This could not be possible without your support. Special thanks to MD Steven Wang for being a wonderful cheerleader and to Jeff Van Harte for providing the incentive through the matching grant. It takes a village - and each of you stepped up to support our TCM students and their efforts to be one of the top investment programs in the nation and I am most grateful as Dean for all that you do and will continue to do in the future.

Steven - can you please pass my message to our alumni and board?

Warm regards,
Sri Sundaram

Yet another proud TCM moment...

The 2025-2026 Titan Capital Management (TCM) students have prevailed again at the Chartered Financial Analysts of Los Angeles Institute Research Challenge (CFALA IRC). This is their 7th consecutive win at this event, which is highly competitive. This year's field included several CSU's as well as UCLA ad USC. TCM fielded two teams, finishing 1st and 3rd with USC taking second place.

Needless to say, I am very proud to be a part of this program, but I am acutely aware of the workload our students, professors and coaches shoulder to achieve these kinds of results. Special shout out to our Professor Kelly Ko (Coach K) and Derek Derman, who coached both teams as they have done in prior years. Clearly, they are quite the team. There are many other students I could thank that helped their fellow competing students and showed up on competition day to root them on. In this regard, TCM has established a very cohesive and collaborative culture of mutual respect.

For fun, I did ask Gemini if there are any other universities in the nation that have achieved this kind of success. Here is Gemini's response below:

What universities have the longest running winning streak for winning the local CFA Investment Research Challenge?

Based on recent results from the 2024 and 2025 competition cycles, a few universities have established significant "dynasties" in their local CFA Institute Research Challenge rounds.

While records for over 1,000 participating universities are maintained by individual local societies (e.g., CFA Society Los Angeles, CFA Society Boston), the following schools currently hold some of the longest documented winning streaks:

Top Local Winning Streaks

Key Standouts
California State University, Fullerton (6 Years): CSUF has dominated the CFA Society Los Angeles local competition, securing their sixth consecutive win in February 2025. Their program, Titan Capital Management, is noted for its rigorous preparation, often fielding multiple teams that place in the top three.

Babson College (5 Years): Representing CFA Society Boston, Babson has won five straight local titles as of 2025. They have a deep history with the competition, having won the local round seven times in the last nine years and even securing a Global Championship in 2007.

University of Sydney: While total consecutive counts vary by source, they are a perennial powerhouse for CFA Society Australia, frequently advancing to and winning the Asia Pacific Regional finals.

Rutgers University: Often cited as a "dynasty" in the CFA Society New York round (one of the most competitive globally), Rutgers has a long history of consecutive wins and high-level finishes in the Americas regional rounds.

The Path to Victory
The local challenge is the first of four stages:

Local: Hosted by local CFA Societies (e.g., San Francisco, Toronto, London).

Sub-Regional: Winners of local rounds compete via recorded presentations.

Regional: (Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific).

Global Final: The top teams from each region compete for the world title.

Pictures attached of the winning teams and our dinner afterwards, where we take the time to honor our students and professors. A special thanks to Dean Sri Sundaram for taking the time to come to the competition and dinner. It really helps to have a supportive Dean for this program. Also thank you to Professor Shane Kim and our Managing Director, Steven Wang, who were at the event and the dinner. Steven pulls double duty as he is the current president of the CFALA. We are lucky to have him as our MD.

Onward this team will go to the Sub-regional, which is a taped video presentation. This is a tough round to get through as we tend to shine in live presentations and Q&A. Good luck to this team! Proud of your effort regardless of future outcomes!

And then only a week later on Friday, November 22, TCM students participated in the annual Chartered Financial Analysts of Orange County (CFAOC) Request For Proposal (RFP) competition. TCM students shined again, placing second in the competition and rewarded with money to mangage for 1-year for the CFAOC. Notice how big this physical presentation venue is from the pictures. I can imagine that it is intimidating to many students or for that matter, any presenter. But therein lies the opportunity. Embracing discomfort and pulling off a success at this young age is what builds grit and confidence early in your professional development. Embrace discomfort because the other side of the coin is opportunity and success. The TCM program is a very large platform that gives you these opportunities for succeeding when there is risk and discomfort. Taking intelligent risks when you’re young can pay-off big for you and pay dividends the rest of your life.

Catching up on TCM events. On Friday, November 15, TCM hosted its annual student investment conference. This is a great venue for students to hear from experienced industry practitioners, network, and participate in a stock analysis competition and a portfolio construction competition judged by experienced professionals. I felt this year was the best we have ever done, and I’m thankful to our conference supporters, panelists, professors, CSUF staff, and most of all our students who took some time on a Friday to invest in themselves. This conference is open to all students, and this year we actually had a team of sophomore high school students present in the portfolio construction competition!!

Following on our SoCal Alumni event, I had the chance to meet with more of our TCM alum’s in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as New York City. A common theme is how happy and successful are alum’s are and the common history they share with being a CSUF Titan and and having gone through the TCM program. Some are not in finance but are the first to say how elements of TCM helped get them to where they are today. Many of the alum’s have not met each other before as we had some disruption during the Covid years. Establishing friendships and helping one another is something that comes very easily to our TCM alum’s. It’s nice to see and be part of. We will continue to promote our TCM community with fun events and updates.
