What makes CSUF's Special Education program truly special? According to Department Chair Dr. Adrian Jung, Ph.D., it starts with the students.

"What I love most about our Special Education program is how passionate our students are about making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities and their families. I'm really grateful to be part of a community that believes every student deserves the opportunity to belong, learn, and thrive."

That sense of community and purpose is at the heart of everything we do in the Department of Special Education. Our students come in with passion β€” and we give them the skills, knowledge, and clinical experience to turn that passion into lasting impact.

Whether you're drawn to working with students with mild to moderate needs or extensive support needs, there's a pathway here for you.

What does it mean to truly grow as an educator?

Dr. Fernando RodrΓguez-Valls, Ph.D., Department Chair and Bilingual Authorization Program Coordinator in CSUF's Department of Secondary Education, shares:

"Working with and learning from the students, staff and faculty at the Department of Secondary Education provides me with the opportunity to create a collective department discourse, to expand my pedagogical repertoire, and most importantly to grow as a caring (con cariΓ±o), respectful, and committed educator and persona."

At CSUF's Department of Secondary Education, growth isn't just something we expect from our students β€” it's something our faculty model every day. We believe the best teachers are lifelong learners who lead with care, build community, and stay committed to the people they serve.

That's the culture we're building here. And we'd love for you to be part of it.

We asked Dr. Joyce Gomez, Ph.D., Associate Professor in CSUF's Department of Literacy & Reading Education, to share a quote that inspires her β€” and this is what she chose:

"The unfinished character of human beings and the transformational character of reality necessitate that education be an ongoing activity."
β€” Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed (2000, p. 84)

It's a powerful reminder that education isn't a destination β€” it's an ongoing, transformational process. And that's exactly what drives the work of our faculty every single day.

Our Department of Literacy & Reading Education is home to nationally and internationally recognized researchers and educators who bring both scholarly expertise and genuine passion into every course β€” whether you're joining us on campus or through our 100% online graduate programs.

What quote has shaped the way you think about teaching or learning? We'd love to hear it in the comments. πŸ‘‡
