The Gator Engineers have arrived! Students and faculty from 3 UF departments are in Pittsburgh for IROS 26, the IEEE/Robotics Society of Japan International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, Sept. 27–Oct. 1. Shown here (L-R) are CISE's, Eakta Jain, Ph.D., Sanjeev Koppal, Ph.D., from ECE, Jacob Carter (ECE), Vaishnav Ramesh (ECE), Adnan Abdullah (ECE), Xianyao Li (ESSIE), Arihant Yadav (CISE) and Yuang Geng (ECE).

Students will be presenting posters and papers throughout the conference, as well as presenting demos and networking with their peers.

What if elementary school students could learn how AI works by moving, jumping and playing? A multidisciplinary team of UF researchers is exploring that question through AI-PLAY, a new NSF-funded project that connects students’ own movements to foundational AI concepts.

Kristy Boyer, Ph.D., and Jennifer Nichols, Ph.D., an associate professor in the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering, are part of the research team, along with Anthony Botelho, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the College of Education.

CISE associate professor Zhe Jiang, Ph.D., appeared on FOX Weather recently to help viewers understand a debate in weather forecasting — whether or not a disturbance currently in the Atlantic would become the season's first hurricane.

The issue? Newer AI-based weather models and traditional physics-based models don't agree.

Jiang, whose research focuses on AI and data science for coastal hazard forecasting, explained that the two kinds of models reason in fundamentally different ways. Physics-based models compute forward from the equations describing the atmosphere, while AI models learn patterns from decades of historical weather data.

Neither can determine which individual storms will spin up a hurricane, and each fills that gap differently.

"Both kinds of models have biases," Jiang said. "We've had decades to learn the habits of physics-based models. With AI, we're still learning."

Two fourth-year CISE students were on two of the four teams recognized in the 2026 Visa Americas Intern Hackathon.

Competing against 200+ interns, Gael Garcia’s team won first place and advanced to the global finals and Nicholas Borden's team received an honorable mention.

Gael (L) and Nicholas (R) competed on separate 6-person teams during their internships with VISA.

Gael’s team built Maya, a multi-agent spend control system for AI-driven procurement. Nicholas' team built Visa Agentic Intermediary, a prototype exploring payments for agentic commerce and stablecoins.

Sanjay Ranka, Ph.D., and Todd Manini, Ph.D., are on a mission to bring health care for seniors into the smartphone age.

Ranka is leading a project that uses technology to gather multi-faceted and useful wellness data, ultimately to improve the quality of life for elderly citizens and their caregivers.

When it comes to caring for our aging loved ones, we fret about mobility, cognition, medications and activity levels. Significant help often seems limited to trips to the doctor’s office or the hospital.

“Health care,” Ranka said, “should happen outside of the hospital.”
