Another PIN summer has come to a close. 1,292 miles to Gainesville! We love our time on this beautiful island, and leaving is always hard . . . especially in August heading back to Florida! Thanks to everyone who opened their homes to us this summer and all of our island experts and support network, you all made this summer fantastic.

Nine weeks flies by when you are having fun! We are so excited about all these students accomplished this summer. We couldn't have done it without the help of Marsha Fader and Betsy Tyler through the summer, or without NCTV who provided amazing A/V support for the final presentations. Thank you to everyone who came out, you are the reason we do this work! Our last weekly recap for the summer! We finally had our very first bonfire of the summer, and the s'mores, sunset and company did not disappoint. The students continued to investigate buildings and properties in the neighborhood for ties back to the original families of New Guinea. A huge thank you to Pauline Bogan and Paul LaPaglia for letting us into your homes and sharing your knowledge and artifacts with us! And finally, we would like to invite you all to our final presentations on August 7th 10-12 at 11 Centre Street. We will be sharing more about our research this summer into the people who created the neighborhood of New Guinea (now often called Five Corners).

It's been a great two weeks! After four weeks of researching, PIN students are identifying sites and houses that belonged to the original New Guinea families or were early houses within the neighborhood. A huge thank you to the current homeowners—Marianne Crowdis, Sam Manske, and Ethan Griffon—who welcomed us into their houses and allowed us to snoop around in your cisterns and attics, your garages and your fireplaces! We are continuing to research, and Marsha Fader kindly brought in her original Sanborn map collection to help the students visualize and identify some of our remaining mystery properties. But it isn't all work; PIN celebrated Ava's birthday with ice cream from Juice Bar down along the waterfront, and we got to spend some time in the yard with Olaf, our 'pawperty' manager. Stay tuned for more house visits and research and come learn about all that we found this summer at our final presentation on August 7th!

Week four was a blast! We started the week out at the Milestone Cranberry Bogs with NCF's Interpretive Education Coordinator and Ecologist, Neil Foley, who talked to the students not only about the history and ecology of a working cranberry bog, but led us on an archaeological scavenger hunt looking for evidence of the former worker's housing on the site! If that weren't enough fun, the students met star mill docent, Bill Winkler and Amy Boyce, millwright and President of Husk Preservation, Inc who is helping to restore the NHA's windmill! Amy was incredibly generous with her knowledge and time, explaining the restoration work, dendrochronology, and walking the group through the layers of preservation interventions at this incredible site. During the weekly research check-in, PIN students shared their research updates for the week, and it was a GOOD week--so many connections are being made between the early New Guinea families and the neighborhood! To wrap things up, PIN celebrated this extra-special Fourth of July in true Nantucket fashion. From the marching drum band and community band, to the water fight on Main Street, and then our own annual cookout at the cottage and fireworks at Brant Point. We even had a special guest appearance from PIN property management's Chief of Fluff and Luf, Olaf (who slept through most of the fireworks)!

Next week marks our summer midterm--where is the summer going?!?! Stay tuned to find out more about our research this summer and for an announcement about the final presentations!

Week 3! After two days of dedicated research in the deeds office, the students got to have a full 'Sconset Day! It started off with a tour by NPT's Executive Director, Rita Carr, of the Codfish Park neighborhood and ended with an amazing stroll around the Underhill Cottages led by local architect and HDC and NHC co-chair, Angus Macleod, who graciously took the group into a cottage under renovation. In between the group got to experience the Bluff Walk and discuss renovation of buildings as well as the conservation efforts underway to try to slow the erosion. Then we had our first 'PIN up' to look at all the information the students are uncovering about the early inhabitants of New Guinea and start to make family connections. If that weren't enough, on Saturday the group participated in NCF's annual Race for Open Space! In addition to volunteering, this year PIN dad, Carlos Ariza, ran the 10k (his very first one)! Go, team, go!
