The Built Heritage History class enjoyed a great field class session with Jeffrey Forbes, Development Director of the Alachua Conservation Trust, learning about the history and material properties of old-growth heart pine used in the heritage buildings of Micanopy, the oldest continuously inhabited community in the interior of Florida. Its downtown area, the Micanopy Historic District, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Not all archives are digital, and even when they are nothing beats getting to see and handle original material! Members of the Cultural Resource Survey class got to dive into the archives of The Research Library of the St. Augustine Historical Society recently. With material dating back to the 16th Century, the Cultural Resource Survey class couldn't ask for a better outing!

We are so proud of recent MA HP grad, Delaney Cecere, who presented her research "Manufactured Heritage: Coastal Mobile Homes of the Florida Keys" at the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians (SESAH) Conference In Savannah! Her presentation looked at the vernacular architecture and prefabricated housing in the Florida Keys, how preservation can assess these, and the impact climate change is having on these buildings. Great job, Delaney!

Last week, MHP Student, Grace Robbins, returned to Washington D.C. to attend the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s newly organized National Preservation Summit as one of 25 emerging professionals selected for the Diversity in Preservation Scholarship. Grace attended sessions by leaders in preservation on advocacy, conservation, memory, and civic engagement and she met Brent Leggs, President and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She also participated in advocacy day on the Hill with the Florida delegation team, informing our state’s representatives on the importance of protecting our historic places and empowering communities as stewards of their local heritage. After a long day of fruitful discussions on the Hill, the team enjoyed visiting the Florida House, the only state embassy in D.C. Grace is grateful to the National Trust for Historic Preservation for supporting emerging scholars and having an opportunity to represent Florida in this national conversation on preservation’s future. UF is proud to have students like Grace--the future of preservation is in good hands with students like her!

Another PIN summer has come to a close. 1,292 miles to Gainesville! We love our time on this beautiful island, and leaving is always hard . . . especially in August heading back to Florida! Thanks to everyone who opened their homes to us this summer and all of our island experts and support network, you all made this summer fantastic.

Our PIN2026 students 'flew the coop' and are off are their next academic adventures. We wish them well on their journeys and can't wait to see what they do next. We will miss you, but welcome to the PIN Alum club!

Nine weeks flies by when you are having fun! We are so excited about all these students accomplished this summer. We couldn't have done it without the help of Marsha Fader and Betsy Tyler through the summer, or without NCTV who provided amazing A/V support for the final presentations. Thank you to everyone who came out, you are the reason we do this work! If you were unable to attend, or if you just want to watch it again, we will be sharing the video and research updates to our website later this fall. Stay tuned!

Join us for our final PIN presentation! The students will share their research into the families that built New Guinea. You will hear about the exciting finds that expand on the known stories of some of the most well-known families as well as lingering questions. We hope to see you all this Friday, August 7th from 10 to 12 at 11 Centre Street

Our last weekly recap for the summer! We finally had our very first bonfire of the summer, and the s'mores, sunset and company did not disappoint. The students continued to investigate buildings and properties in the neighborhood for ties back to the original families of New Guinea. A huge thank you to Pauline Bogan and Paul LaPaglia for letting us into your homes and sharing your knowledge and artifacts with us! And finally, we would like to invite you all to our final presentations on August 7th 10-12 at 11 Centre Street. We will be sharing more about our research this summer into the people who created the neighborhood of New Guinea (now often called Five Corners).

It's been a great two weeks! After four weeks of researching, PIN students are identifying sites and houses that belonged to the original New Guinea families or were early houses within the neighborhood. A huge thank you to the current homeowners—Marianne Crowdis, Sam Manske, and Ethan Griffon—who welcomed us into their houses and allowed us to snoop around in your cisterns and attics, your garages and your fireplaces! We are continuing to research, and Marsha Fader kindly brought in her original Sanborn map collection to help the students visualize and identify some of our remaining mystery properties. But it isn't all work; PIN celebrated Ava's birthday with ice cream from Juice Bar down along the waterfront, and we got to spend some time in the yard with Olaf, our 'pawperty' manager. Stay tuned for more house visits and research and come learn about all that we found this summer at our final presentation on August 7th!
