UF Engineering at the Tech Coast Conference!

ISE faculty and staff joined leaders from across Northeast Florida at the Jacksonville Tech Coast Conference to discuss the technologies and trends shaping our future. 💻

We were proud to see Shantih Spanton, Ph.D., associate director of ISE Jacksonville graduate programs, moderate the Women in Technology Panel, with Marie Kane, Ph.D., assistant vice president for National Security Research, serving as a panelist. The discussion explored how emerging technologies are transforming leadership, while keeping the needs of individuals and communities at the forefront.

ISE faculty also shared their expertise as invited lecturers:
🔹 Vipul Bansal, Ph.D.: From Data to Decisions: How AI Can Predict Risk, Failure, and What Happens Next
🔹 Jia “Peter” Liu, Ph.D.: Additive Manufacturing to Enhance Product Innovation, Manufacturability and Supply Chain Resilience
🔹 Long Cheng, Ph.D.: Securing the Connected World: Privacy and Security in Smart Homes and Cyber-Physical Systems

We’re proud to see our faculty contributing their expertise to conversations about AI, innovation, cybersecurity and the future of technology in Florida. 🐊

Upcoming ISE Seminar with Yuehwern Yih, Ph.D., titled "Cyber-Physical Gaps in Healthcare and Humanitarian Assistance"! 📢

Yuehwern Yih, Ph.D. is the Tompkins Distinguished Professor of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University and is Member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) Fellow, and Executive Leadership in Academic Technology, Engineering and Science (ELATE) Fellow.

Her core research focuses on understanding dynamics of system behaviors to improve the performance of complex systems under volatile environments including manufacturing systems, supply chains, humanitarian assistance, health care delivery, and global development.

This talk examines these challenges in last-mile delivery for healthcare and humanitarian assistance, where decision-making is shaped by the dynamic interplay of human judgment, technological capabilities, and on-the-ground realities. Drawing on case studies, it will discuss how discrepancies between data collected for one operational purpose and its subsequent use for modeling or strategic decision-making can propagate through the system—amplifying risks and degrading performance.

After 32 years working at the University of Florida, Patsy Messinger — the heart and soul of engineering’s Outreach Engineering Management program — is retiring. 💙

Messinger joined OEM as a coordinator in 2000. The program was in its early stages then, but OEM’s purpose remains the same: supporting over 1,000 graduates through their professional careers. OEM is a collaboration between UF’s Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering and Warrington College of Business. It provides a technology-driven curriculum for working professionals to complete their master’s degree and expand their leadership skills.

Once Messinger announced her retirement from OEM, many former students and colleagues reached out to her.

“A lot of the messages have been well wishes and sharing memories,” said Messinger. “But many have been focused on how valuable the program has been in their careers. It’s very gratifying and has provided me with a sense of closure.”

Mengyu Li, Ph.D., ISE instructional assistant professor and OEM program director, said Messinger’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment for students has been an essential part of the program’s success.

“Patsy’s dedication has been instrumental in transforming OEM into a highly regarded program with a strong reputation for supporting the educational and professional growth of working engineers across Florida and beyond,” said Li.
