Growing up in El Salvador, master’s student Ximena Merino always had graduate school in her life plan. 🎓

While visiting family in Florida, Merino scheduled a tour at the University of Florida out of pure curiosity and fell in love with the campus.

“I had never been to a university in the United States before. I was like, ‘Wow,’” Merino recalled. “Last year, when I was looking for programs, I looked at UF’s Industrial & Systems Engineering program, and it turned out to be a good program. It became my top choice, and I was really excited when I got accepted.”

Since joining ISE in August 2025, Merino has enjoyed the mix of industrial and systems engineering in her courses and has joined various research projects. As she begins her final year, Merino will work on her master’s research, focusing on optimizing the design of sewer systems using network optimization.

Upcoming ISE Seminar with Olaf Diegel, Ph.D., titled "AM + AI: A powerful combination"! 📢

Olaf is an educator, a practitioner of additive manufacturing (AM) and product development with an excellent track record of developing innovative solutions to engineering problems. As professor of additive manufacturing at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, he is involved in all aspects of AM and is one of the principal authors of the annual Wohlers Report, considered by many to be the bible of AM. One of his main areas of research expertise is in design for AM.

In this talk, we will look at some real-world examples of both good design for AM practice and of how computational design and AM can be used to add significant value and innovation to products. We’ll also examine the potential links between computational design and GPT (generative pre-trained transformer) AI as a stepping stone towards true engineering quality 3D AI. This includes product applications in automotive, healthcare, production engineering and artistic applications. It also examines some of the issues around how we need to start adapting our thinking to be ready for these continuously evolving technologies.

And we'll also look at some awesome 3D printed guitars!

Upcoming ISE Seminar with Matt Frank, Ph.D., C.G. Turk and Joyce A. Therkildsen Department Chair for the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State University! 📢

This talk will focus on the topic of Hybrid Manufacturing and how we can innovate solutions that combine the best of multiple manufacturing and material choices. The reality is that most every product today is made use a hybrid approach; we not only cut, but bend, form, add, subtract, treat, color and otherwise add value over a series of steps and methods. The particular focus of this talk will be on how we combine additive and subtractive manufacturing methods, and how we combine decidedly different materials in an integrated process.

Fatemeh Nosrat, Ph.D., ISE assistant professor is transforming healthcare and cancer care through AI, digital twins and data-driven decision-making with UF Health Cancer Institute.

Hospitals, researchers and clinicians often have limited resources, whether that’s staff, time or the number of animals to use in an experiment. That’s where operations research comes in. It’s a framework involving artificial intelligence and advanced data techniques to optimize decision support systems.

“We use quantitative math decision-making models to address unmet needs in health care and cancer care,” said Fatemeh Nosrat, Ph.D.

Emily Stout has always found joy in learning. During her undergraduate graduation ceremony at Florida State University, in fact, she had an epiphany: she should earn a master’s degree. 🐊

But where? What program was the best fit? The answer, she said, prompted her to continue her education, donning orange and blue at the University of Florida’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, known as ISE.

“My first experience with the University of Florida and hearing about the master’s program was with Patsy Messinger, former OEM director,” said Stout. “She convinced me, a die-hard FSU girl. And I can say now I’m very glad she did.”

As Stout heads toward spring graduation — this time in Gator Nation — she is eager to explore new opportunities that challenge her as a person and engineer. 🎓

At the September AI Connect meetup, Vipul Bansal, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Florida Jacksonville gave a presentation on his AI research applications in multiple application domains.

Jennifer Reid, Associate Director of Computer & Information Science & Engineering at Jacksonville, was also in attendance and gave a brief introduction about UF Jacksonville and the exciting graduate programs offered at the new campus.

Upcoming ISE Seminar with David Morton, Ph.D., titled "Markov decision processes and multi-stage stochastic programming: modeling and computation"! 📢

Dave Morton, Ph.D., is the Walter P. Murphy Professor in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences (IEMS) at Northwestern University, where he previously served as department chair. This seminar captures a type of MDP with continuous states and actions and also with a particular structure. We extend Markov-chain based policy graphs from stochastic programming to include a form of statistical learning with Bayesian updates and to include decision-dependent one-step transition probabilities. Much of the talk aims to illustrate the expressiveness of our modeling approach.
