Students and faculty from our department had a blast in Miami this past week attending the 2026 Florida Planning Conference hosted by APA Florida

From student presentations to a happy hour with alumni and friends, this year’s conference was one for the books. Check out some of the highlights:

✅ MURP and Ph.D. students held presentations and poster sessions sharing their research on transit planning, urban sprawl, affordable housing and more.

✅ MURP student Sidra Gray placed second in the student presentation competition.

✅ A team of students received their official Award of Merit for the project “UF x LaVilla”, a proposal for the University of Florida’s new Jacksonville campus. Read more about this project by visiting our News section, 🔗 in bio.

✅ Our students had the chance to network with planning professionals from across the state of Florida and discuss the latest trends in the world of planning.

Our department traveled to Pittsburgh earlier this month to attend the 2026 Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) Conference, bringing together planning students and educators from across the country to discuss developments in the field, share research and collaborate on improving planning education.

Faculty and students presented on topics ranging from planning career mobility, high-speed rail and transportation planning to online learning, artificial intelligence in planning curriculum and cultural heritage in Florida.



Dr. Cleary Larkin presents on ‘“Old Florida” & the Working Waterfront: Understanding a Gulf Coast Cultural Region Through Identity, Heritage and Landscape’.

Kyle Dost, AICP, shares data and lessons from our MURP Online program and the benefits of expanding access to planning education.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Kristin Larsen, FAICP, Professor in the University of Florida Department of Urban and Regional Planning, on receiving the prestigious Margarita McCoy Award for the Advancement of Women in Planning. Dr. Larsen was honored at the 2026 Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) Conference in Pittsburgh this past weekend.

Presented biennially by the ACSP Faculty Women’s Interest Group, the award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of women in planning at institutions of higher education through service, teaching and research. Dr. Larsen was recognized for her commitment to student success and her dedication to expanding access to planning education.

Her leadership in founding the MURP Online program exemplifies that dedication. As her nomination letter explains:

“Dr. Larsen’s achievements are a testament to not only the integral role that women play in planning, but also the way in which innovations can make the field more inclusive. For example, Dr. Larsen’s leadership founded UF’s online Master of Urban and Regional Planning program, the first PAB-accredited degree of its kind. Understanding that in-person attendance at UF’s main campus in Gainesville was not a possibility for many, especially women who are more likely to be constrained by familial and work obligations, Dr. Larsen devised a path forward. Taught by UF faculty, online students receive as near as possible the same curriculum and tutelage as their in-person counterparts. Since its Fall 2012 launch, the program has graduated 164 planners, 98 of which were women. Her forward-thinking also enabled UF to seamlessly transition all planning students online at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when social distancing became best practice. UF’s online program quickly became a national model for other planning schools grappling with the rapidly changing pedagogical landscape.”
