Remanufacturing and recycling e-waste is especially labor-intensive and inefficient. It’s tedious work with potentially toxic materials. It’d be great if robots could do it, right?

Sara Behdad, Ph.D., thinks so, too. With support from the National Science Foundation, her lab is leading a project to develop a self-learning digital twin to guide robots in disassembling consumer electronics for remanufacturing.

How is research security enacted in the daily work of pre-faculty researchers (graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, lab managers and research specialists)? And how do they recognize, interpret and escalate security vulnerabilities under conditions of uncertainty?

Civil & Coastal Engineering Professor Denise R. Simmons, Ph.D., P.E., is leading work to find out.

The project, funded by the National Science Foundation, will support more effective and evidence-based approaches to research security and strengthen the nation's capacity to protect federally funded research while preserving the openness and collaboration essential to scientific discovery.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Andrew Altieri, Ph.D., recently named the Scott and Lindy Hearne Rising Star Professor in ESSIE.

The professorship supports faculty in the UF Center for Coastal Solutions and will specifically provide Altieri and his students with greater flexibility to pursue novel research and the ability to rapidly respond to emerging water-quality challenges.

The Hearnes are excited to continue their relationship with UF and CCS.

“The University of Florida is a great place to leave a legacy, and the Center for Coastal Solutions is a good place to focus your energy if you want to help improve the environment and you are able to help financially,” Scott Hearne noted in 2023 when they created the endowment.

For Michael Drews, Frederick Rosner and Professor Emeritus Robert Thieke, Ph.D., a friendship that began in 1974 at Nesaquake Junior High School on Long Island remains a constant, a source of support and continuity in their lives.

It's also the wellspring of the Robert Thieke Endowed Professorship, established in 2025 to honor Thieke upon his retirement after 35 years at UF.

A key group of stakeholders are often inadequately considered in road infrastructure design — cyclists.

Xiang Jacob Yan, Ph.D., is trying to change that.

An assistant professor in the University of Florida’s Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering, Yan's lab is developing a tool to help roadway designers incorporate cyclists’ perspectives with the help of large language models, or LLMs.

For street designers, it’s like having a group of cycling advocates in the room while they work.

Showing the wide-reaching impact of his lab's work, Environmental Engineering Sciences Professor Antarpreet Jutla, Ph.D., is featured in not one, but TWO stories airing on Florida Fox stations. Both stories are related to a recent uptick in Florida cases of flesh-eating Vibrio bacteria.
