Civil engineering graduate student Noah Breder (2nd from left) has received the prestigious 2026–27 Ronald G. Burg Leadership Fellowship, awarded by the American Concrete Institute, known as ACI.

With a monetary award, the fellowship supports undergraduate and graduate students in concrete-related degree programs. Beyond supporting research activities, the fellowship covers travel costs to multiple ACI conventions, including the ACI Concrete Convention to be held this October in Atlanta.

“For me, the most important aspect of receiving this fellowship is the chance to attend the two conventions this academic year,” he said. “The networking events and integration with committee work are great opportunities for fellowship recipients.”

Breder is advised by ESSIE Associate Professor & Associate Director Christopher Ferraro, Ph.D., P.E.

Congratulations to Christopher Ferraro, Ph.D., P.E., Ashish Dinesh Patel, Ph.D., and Kyle A. Riding, Ph.D., P.E., honored by the American Concrete Institute with the 2026 Wason Medal for Materials Research.

They, along with their co-authors Jerry Paris, James E. Baciak and Eric Richard Giannini, were recognized for their paper “Thin Cement-Based Composites for Efficient Neutron Attenuation,” published in the ACI Materials Journal in July 2025.

The Wason Medal for Materials Research may be bestowed annually on the author(s) of a peer-reviewed ACI Materials Journal paper published by the Institute that makes extraordinary contributions or impact on the state of knowledge of cement-based materials used in the construction industry.

🏆 The Fall 2026 awardees will be recognized at the ACI Concrete Convention next week in Atlanta, GA.
