On Oct. 13, the Kappa Epsilon Beta Beta Chapter and SNPhA student organizations at our Orlando campus came together for a meaningful Fun Run/Walk in support of those living with metastatic breast cancer. Throughout the month, these groups raised funds for METAvivor, an organization dedicated to funding metastatic breast cancer research. Their efforts led to Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer officially recognizing Oct. 13 as National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day in the Orlando community.

To close out the day, Kappa Epsilon proudly participated in METAvivor’s global event, serving as a global landmark during their live webinar. Each floor of the UF Research and Academic Center featured different colored lighting to support the cause.

UF College of Pharmacy researchers recently took their science into a weightless world.

During two parabolic flights over Zurich, Switzerland, six University of Florida and UF Health researchers and trainees had only 20 to 25 seconds at a time to run experiments in microgravity. Those brief windows allowed them to study how biological systems respond to microgravity and explore what that could mean for the development of future medicines.

Where does a promising cancer-fighting compound come from?

University of Florida College of Pharmacy researchers have answered that question for dolastatin 15, identifying a previously underexplored genus of marine cyanobacteria called Dapis as its natural source.

The study, published in the journal PNAS, also reveals the genes responsible for producing the compound, which gives scientists new insight into how nature creates these important molecules.

The discovery links the anticancer compound dolastatin 15 to a previously unexplored marine cyanobacteria genus.

Starting this fall, University of Florida College of Pharmacy students in Jacksonville have a new campus to call home. UF officially opened its Jacksonville campus with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sept. 9, and now, UF pharmacy students have a brand-new space in which to take their exams and study.
