A delegation from the UF College of Pharmacy recently visited Taiwan to advance new partnerships with National Taiwan University and the National Defense Medical University College of Pharmacy. In the past year, these institutions have formalized their relationships with UF through a Memorandum of Understanding and an Agreement of Academic Collaboration that will promote joint research initiatives, scholarly publications, conferences and academic programming. During the visit, UF faculty delivered lectures to pharmacy students, toured community pharmacies and research facilities and gained insight into Taiwan’s culture and pharmacy practice.

Citing research led by faculty in the UF College of Pharmacy, the National Institutes of Health has announced its Investigational New Drug application for mitragynine, the primary psychoactive compound found in kratom, has taken effect with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The milestone clears the way for an NIH-led phase I clinical trial in humans to evaluate mitragynine as a potential treatment of opioid use disorder.

UF College of Pharmacy researchers developed the purified formulation that will be used in the trial and conducted the preclinical studies that supported the Investigational New Drug application.

The UF College of Pharmacy’s new AI Partnership and Innovation Hub is poised to centralize the college’s diverse AI efforts and position the University of Florida as a national leader in pharmacy AI through research, clinical collaboration and services. The hub will support projects like PharmAIcist, a commercially viable AI platform and clinical decision support tool.

Dr. Kate DeSear, a clinical associate professor in the UF College of Pharmacy and an infectious diseases clinical specialist at UF Health Shands Hospital, has been named a fellow of the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists. The fellowship distinction recognizes outstanding SIDP members who have made significant and sustained contributions to infectious diseases and to the organization’s mission.

A member of SIDP since 2012, DeSear has served in several leadership roles within the organization.

Dr. Md Mahmudul Hasan has received one of the University of Florida's highest honors for a junior faculty member. He was one of 10 faculty members awarded the University of Florida Excellence Award for Assistant Professors this spring.

"For me, it’s not just a personal achievement, but a wonderful recognition of the hard work of my entire team, including my students, analysts and our collaborators across UF and beyond," Hasan said. "Our research sits at the intersection of AI, pharmacy and public health, and we are focused on tackling complex problems such as the opioid crisis and mental illness."

Through the Interprofessional Healthcare Coalition in Orlando, UF College of Pharmacy and UCF College of Medicine students came together last week to emphasize the importance of team-based care. Pharmacy students led interactive stations for second-year medical students preparing for clerkships, creating a fun and educational opportunity to highlight interprofessional learning in Lake Nona.
