🐊 THE BATON OF BROTHERHOOD: FROM THE RUSH CHAIRMEN OF THE PAST TO THE BROTHERS OF TODAY 🐊

More than 60 years of ΣΧ Rush at the University of Florida. Different generations. Different styles. The same Brotherhood.

Looking through these incredible Gamma Theta Rush materials from the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, one thing immediately jumps off the page.

The clothes changed. The hair definitely changed. 😂 And somewhere along the way, “Rush” became “Recruitment.”

But the message has remained remarkably the same.

For generations, Gamma Theta Rush Chairmen have welcomed young men arriving at the University of Florida and challenged them to make an important decision—not simply about where they would spend their college years, but about the men they would surround themselves with and the Brotherhood they could carry with them for the rest of their lives.

One Rush Chairman wrote that the fraternity decision could “influence your life after graduation.”

Another described Sigma Chi as a Brotherhood of men with “different temperaments, talents, and convictions.”

And the cover of the 1982 Gamma Theta Rush booklet asked perhaps the simplest and most important question of all:

“What makes your fraternity different from the rest… Why Sigma Chi?”

More than four decades later, that is still exactly the right question.

🏃‍♂️ AND NOW THE BATON HAS BEEN PASSED.

Today, Rush Chairman Harrison White and the Fall 2026 Rush Committee—Ryan Cooper, Ryan Sweeney and Michael Colella—have inherited a responsibility carried by generations of Gamma Theta Brothers before them.

They aren’t simply recruiting another pledge class.

They are recruiting the Brothers who will help write Gamma Theta’s NEXT 100 YEARS.

And if anyone wonders whether Rush can really have an impact decades into the future, look at the Spring 1992 Rush picture.

🏗️ SPRING RUSH ’92 → THE NEW GAMMA THETA HOUSE

Among the young men recruited into Gamma Theta in Spring 1992 were two pledge Brothers whose paths would come together again more than three decades later:

🏛️ Brother Travis Vickers — Architect, Vickers Design Group
🏗️ Brother Jim Ellspermann — Builder, Brasfield & Gorrie

Today, those two Spring ’92 pledge Brothers are helping design and build Gamma Theta’s new home—the house that will serve generations of Sigma Chis for our NEXT 100 YEARS.

Think about that.

Someone recruited Travis and Jim in 1992.

At the time, nobody could possibly have known that more than 30 years later, those two young men would be handed another kind of baton—the responsibility of helping create the next great home of Gamma Theta.

THAT is why Rush matters.

The young man you recruit today isn’t simply a name on the Fall 2026 pledge class roster.

He could become a future Consul. A Significant Sig. A business or community leader. A mentor. A lifelong friend.

Or maybe, 30 years from now, he will be the Brother designing, building, financing or leading the next great chapter in Gamma Theta history.

But numbers and awards don’t ultimately tell the Gamma Theta story.

BROTHERS DO.

Every generation inherits something from the Brothers who came before it—and every generation has the responsibility to leave Gamma Theta stronger than they found it.

The Rush Chairmen of the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s carried the baton.

The Brothers who recruited the Spring ’92 class carried it—and today we can literally see part of the result rising from the ground through Brothers Travis Vickers and Jim Ellspermann.

And now, Harrison White, Ryan Cooper, Ryan Sweeney and Michael Colella, the baton is yours.

RUN WITH IT. 🏃‍♂️

Find young men of character.

Find men with different temperaments, talents and convictions.

Find men who will challenge one another, support one another and become lifelong Brothers.

Find the next Travis Vickers. Find the next Jim Ellspermann. Find the Brothers whose contributions to Gamma Theta may not reveal themselves for another 30 or 40 years.

And to every young man considering fraternity life at the University of Florida this fall:

Look around. Meet the Brothers. Ask questions. Tour the houses. Find the men who share your values and will challenge you to become your best.

Most importantly—be yourself.

Then ask the same question generations of Florida men have asked before you:

🐊 BROTHERHOOD IN ACTION: WE FOUND BROTHER ARCHITECHT KEMP! 🐊
Celebrating 💯 Years. Building 💯 More.

Brothers—WOW. This is exactly what Brotherhood looks like.

Yesterday, I shared the story of Brother James O. Kemp Sr., a Gamma Theta Sigma Chi and architect connected to an extraordinary era in the history of our University of Florida Sigma Chi House.

There was just one thing missing:

We didn’t have a picture of Brother Kemp.

So I threw out a challenge to our Brothers: Can anyone help us find him?

⏱️ LESS THAN 24 HOURS LATER… MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Thanks to some incredible Sigma Chi detective work and the help of Brother David Gutknecht, we now have photographs and pages from the 1951–1954 University of Florida yearbooks—including a photograph of Brother Kemp himself!

Gator SIG 🐊Brotherhood gets things done.

And here’s a piece of Gator history that is just too funny not to share… 😂

🍢 YES, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA YEARBOOK WAS CALLED “THE SEMINOLE!” 🐊

That’s right. These aren’t Florida State yearbooks. They are University of Florida yearbooks!

Back in that era, what became Florida State had only recently transitioned from its days as the Florida State College for Women—and meanwhile the Gators had already been publishing The Seminole in Gainesville for decades.

Then our in-state football rival apparently liked the name so much they decided to make it their mascot. 😂

Too funny. We’ll let the historians—and the Gators and Noles—debate that one! 🐊😂

But inside these old yearbooks is something much more important: a remarkable window into Gamma Theta life more than 70 years ago—Brother Kemp, Derby Days, Derby Gals, Sweethearts, traditions and friendships that helped build the Chapter we inherited.

🏛️ PRESERVING OUR FIRST 💯 YEARS

Brother Kemp’s story is exactly the kind of history we want to preserve in the Alumni Room of our new Gamma Theta House.

Think about what just happened:

One Brother helped shape Gamma Theta’s history.
Decades later, another Brother went looking for his story.
Within 24 hours, another Sigma Chi Brother helped us find it.

That’s Brotherhood.

One generation builds it.
The next preserves it.
Another carries it forward.

And that makes the NEXT chapter of this story even more incredible.

🏗️ THE GAMMA THETA BATON IS BEING PASSED…

Look closely at the new sign going up in front of our old house as it comes down.

More than six decades after Brother Kemp’s era, two more Gamma Theta Sigma Chi Brothers are stepping forward to help build the home that will carry our Chapter into its NEXT 💯 YEARS.

And they aren’t just Brothers.

They’re PLEDGE BROTHERS.

How appropriate is that?

Two pledge Brothers who once began their Sigma Chi journey together at Gamma Theta are now taking the Gamma Theta baton and helping build the house that future generations of Brothers will call HOME.

From Brother Kemp’s generation…

to Brothers Vickers and Ellspermann’s generation…

to young men who haven’t even arrived at the University of Florida yet…

the story continues.

That is what makes this project so much bigger than constructing a building.

We’re connecting generations of Sigma Chis.

And Brothers, there is a GREAT story behind these two pledge Brothers and how they ended up helping build the next Gamma Theta House…

WHAT PIECE OF GAMMA THETA HISTORY ARE YOU HOLDING?

DIG THEM OUT. SEND THEM TO US. TELL US THE STORY.

And if Gamma Theta played an important role in your life, there’s another way to become part of this chapter:

HELP US FINISH THE HOUSE.

315 Brothers have already stepped forward and pledged more than $4.3 MILLION toward our new home.

Now we need more Brothers to help us finish what we’ve started—the kitchen, furnishings, Alumni Room, gathering spaces and everything necessary to turn a building into a Sigma Chi HOME.

Someday a young Brother will walk through that Alumni Room.

He’ll see Brother Kemp.

He’ll see the Brothers and traditions of the 1950s.

He’ll learn about Brothers Vickers and Ellspermann and the Sigma Chis who built the new house.

And he’ll see the names and stories of the Brothers of our generation who stepped forward when Gamma Theta needed them.

The first 💯 years gave us our legacy.

What we do TODAY will determine what we leave for the next 💯.

🏛️ MEET A SIGMA CHI ARCHITECT CONNECTED TO OUR HISTORY

Thanks to the Gamma Theta Complete Directory, we identified:

Brother James O. Kemp Sr.
🐊 Gamma Theta — Initiated 1950
🎓 University of Florida — Class of 1953
🏛️ Architect — Jacksonville, Florida

Brother Kemp wasn’t simply an architect working around UF.

He was one of us.

By 1961, Kemp had designed his own modernist Jacksonville residence, and UF historical records identify Kemp, Bunch & Jackson, Architects in connection with UF’s Architecture & Fine Arts Building in 1963—the same remarkable era in which our Gamma Theta House was developed.

Think about that: A Gamma Theta Brother went from experiencing Sigma Chi at Florida to practicing architecture during the era when the home that served generations of future Brothers was created.

More than 380,000 Brothers have worn the White Cross around the world—and every one of us has a chapter we are proud to call home.

For us, that chapter is Gamma Theta at the University of Florida. 🐊 ΣΧ

For nearly 100 years, generations of Gamma Theta Brothers have walked through the doors at UF and discovered something far greater than a college fraternity: lifelong friendships, leadership, service, tradition and a Brotherhood that never ends at graduation.

Today, we have the privilege—and responsibility—of carrying that legacy forward.
As Gamma Theta recently celebrated its 💯th Anniversary, we aren’t simply celebrating what the Brothers before us built.

We’re building the foundation for the next 💯 years.

🐊 ARE YOU READY, GAMMA THETA? 🐊 The House Is Coming Down. Our Next 💯 Years Are Going Up.

Brothers—this video is more than the demolition of a house.

It marks the end of one chapter in Gamma Theta history—and the beginning of another.

For generations, thousands of Sigma Chis walked through these doors at the University of Florida. Friendships were formed here. Leaders were developed here. Lifelong memories were made here.

And now, the old Gamma Theta Chapter House is coming down.

But what comes next is what should excite every Gamma Theta Brother:

🏗️ Construction of our new home is beginning.
🐊 Our goal: Move-in August 2027.
🏛️ Our mission: Celebrating 100 Years—and Building 100 More.

LOOK WHAT 315 BROTHERS HAVE ALREADY ACCOMPLISHED

Together, 315 donors have pledged more than $4.3 MILLION toward our new Gamma Theta home.

That is extraordinary.

But consider this:

Those 315 Brothers represent only about 13% of our Alumni base.

Imagine what Gamma Theta could build if we doubled that participation.

Imagine 630 Brothers standing behind this project.

Imagine what another $4 million—or more—could allow us to accomplish.

The structure may be going up, but our job isn’t finished.

Now we need to turn a building into a HOME.

That means furnishings.
Kitchen equipment.
Alumni spaces.
Technology.
Historical displays.
Common areas.
Outdoor spaces.
And all the details that will make this a place Gamma Theta Brothers will be proud to call home for generations.

For years, we’ve talked about the new house.

We’ve shown drawings.

We’ve raised money.

We’ve made plans.

Now the walls are actually coming down.

And soon, new ones will begin going up.

When we walk through those doors in August 2027, I want every Gamma Theta Brother to be able to look around and say:

“I helped build this.”

Not just for today’s undergraduates.

Not just for our pledge classes.

But for the thousands of young men who will call Gamma Theta home over the next 100 years.

We have already raised $4.3 million with 315 donors.

Imagine what we can build if we double it.
