🟥 What does a tortoise need when the ground gets too hard to dig? 🟥

On Friday, October 2 from 5-7 PM on the Hill at Depot Park, join the SAAH and other community members to imagine infrastructure that will allow local species to survive the climate conditions they face in 2045. 🐢🦉🐿️🐸

One Million Counterextinctions is a multi-stage, multi-year civic project led by Conrad Cheung (Assistant Professor of 3D + Extended Media) in partnership with Alachua County Commissioner Anna Prizzia and the Office of Resiliency. By 2045, rising heat, saltwater intrusion, habitat loss and seasonal disruption will push dozens of local species past thresholds they can't come back from. The species our lives depend on have no say in how cities build; this project proposes a city-level prototype for designing multispecies infrastructure as a public, non-expert endeavor.

At Depot Park, you'll be introduced to a local species and the specific climate scenario it faces by 2045, and design a response by drawing or modeling: a habitat, a system, a tool — something no one has imagined yet. No expertise necessary and there are no single solutions; the event is free to the public, open to all ages, and you can drop in at any time.

Every design is credited to its maker and enters a permanent, open-source public archive at counterextinctions.com — already home to more than 250 community-authored designs — free for anyone to build. The project's first installations, selected from that archive, will be fabricated at functional scale and sited on public land across Gainesville, where the species they were designed for will test them as real infrastructure.

The SAAH welcomes Benedicta Opoku-Mensah as our 2026-27 Artist-in-Residence and Curator for the 4Most Gallery! 🤠🌟🩷

Benedicta Opoku-Mensah (Benedicta Opoku-Mensah) is an interdisciplinary, material and process-based artist from Ghana. Working across sculpture, performance, poetry, installation and hybrid object-making, she explores the cultural meanings embedded in materials and everyday objects. By disrupting their conventional functions, she questions how gender, class and colonial histories influence perceptions of labor, craftsmanship and material value. Through absurdity, hybridity, humor and storytelling, she creates objects that blur the boundaries between utility and adornment, familiarity and estrangement, inviting new ways of engaging with the material world.

Benedicta earned her BA in Integrated Rural Art and Industry from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, and received her MFA from UF. Her works have been shown at the Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan, Alabama; Mattie Kelly Art Center in Niceville, Florida; and the Historic Thomas Center, Cade Museum and Cotton Club Museum in Gainesville.

Join us in welcoming Benedicta and stay tuned for more SAAHmazing highlights!

Excavating a Legacy: Dr. Kathleen Deagan
Marston Science Library, 2nd floor
August 20 - December 18, 2026

Dr. Kathleen Deagan began her career as one of only a few women archaeologists. Despite the professional challenges that brought, she pioneered historical archaeology techniques that are utilized worldwide. Since 1972, she has excavated in St. Augustine, Florida. Her work there led to one of her most significant achievements, identifying Ft. Mose, the first free Black community in what would later become the United States. Today, after more than 50 years in the field, she is a world-renowned scholar who continues to publish books and excavate historic sites.

Excavating a Legacy was curated by Maile McCall, in partial fulfillment of a Master of Arts in Museum Studies (UF). McCall worked with Gifford Waters (Collections Manager for Historical Archaeology, Florida Museum of Natural History) and Lourdes Santamaría-Wheeler (Exhibits Director, Smathers Libraries) to research and create the exhibit. It was designed by Katiana Bagué (Exhibits Associate, Smathers Libraries) and Lourdes Santamaría-Wheeler. The exhibit features items from the Smathers Libraries, excerpts from oral history interviews, and artifacts from the Florida Museum of Natural History, where Dr. Deagan was Curator of Historical Archaeology for 28 years. Exhibition highlights include 16th, 17th, and 18th century archaeological artifacts, several of Dr. Deagan’s numerous publications, and personal letters and ephemera.

The exhibit is on view on the 2nd floor of Marston Science Library August 20, 2026 – December 18, 2026. The building is open to the public Monday through Friday 8:00a.m. – 10:00p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10:00am – 6:00pm except for university holidays and semester breaks. For exceptions and holidays view the building hours on the Libraries’ shared calendar. All exhibitions are open to the public and free of charge.
