Six men at Jefferson College founded Phi Gamma Delta in 1848. This group of men, known as the Immortal Six, was made up of John Templeton McCarty, Samuel Beatty Wilson, James Elliott Jr, Ellis Bailey Gregg, Daniel Webster Crofts, and
Naaman Fletcher. These men created a Fraternity built on the ideals of Friendship, Knowledge, Service, Morality and Excellence. They started out meeting in a log cabin and could never have imagined what the fraternity looks like today. Over 170,000 brothers have been initiated since 1848. Currently there are 126 chapters and 17 Delta Colonies in the United States and Canada. The Upsilon Phi Chapter:
The Upsilon Phi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta was founded in 1940 at The University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Over the years, the Upsilon Phi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity has been an important part of the University of Florida community. From our founding in 1940 to the present, our proud history speaks for itself with consistent academic and athletic achievement as well as strong leadership on the UF campus. While many of our brothers have gone on to successful and distinguished careers in business, law, medicine and countless other endeavors, the common bond of our brotherhood remains, along with our shared principles and values. The early training we received through our Fraternity, including organizational and social skills, leadership and character development, and teamwork, has been integral to our personal success. Our founders established an institution that has impacted the lives of many, and our brotherhood continues to take pride in advancing their principles and the long lineage of Phi Gams at the University of Florida. All Phi Gamma Delta alumni can be proud of the legacy we have helped create and the historical quality of our Chapter that continues to date. The Chapter plays a significant role in the personal and professional development of its members and its growth is crucial in today's competitive world.
